What do you want in a web host?

Howdy folks,

Those of you who visit Site Pt. may have ran across my post asking for feedback, and here I am again. We've gotten a LOT of ideas, but I am looking for more as we strive to become the best host out there and provide the best service.

When choosing a web host, what are your priorities? What do you want to see a web hosting company offer?

Sincerely,

Vladislav Davidzon <[email protected]>

Here are some things I would like:

1) Unlimited databases
2) PHP/mySQL support
3) Perl support
4) Fast tech support
5) Guareenteed (sp?) uptime
6) Money Back Guarrente (sp?)
7) Bulletin Board Tech Support would be a major plus
Cool Fast Servers
9) Control panel to add email address, databases etc.
10) ftp

There are more, but mostly all hosts include them, so I won't bother

My ideal package would be $40.00 per year inclusive of yearly domain renewal and web space with the following features.

1)10mb space with 2G bandwidth.
2)Cgi-bin
3)Formmail and other scripts available.
4)Automated control panel.
5)Ftp
6)No advertisment of any kind.

The above is for a basic package and if any web hosting company can offer such deals I would definitely sign up with them.

NSS,

Most web hosts offer what you asked for for $10/month, plus another $10-15/year for the domain... I am not quite sure what you are looking for that you can't find.

Can you explain?

NSS,

Vladislav is right... Though most hosts don't deal with payment for the domain, between hosting and the domain, you should be able to get what you are looking for for $40/mo. and often cheaper.

In all reality, you would only pay $10-$15/mo. for the hosting package and no more than $35/yr. for the domain (which is expensive now)...

With a $20/mo. package (expensive) and the domain, you are spending about $23/mo. (at most) for the entire deal.

I understand that you probably want to pay for all of it together (and thus have the host pay for the domain) but what you want is very easily accomplished.

Actually what I meant was if a web hoster also offer domain registration through them and can provide a basic package that I mentioned then it would be to the advantage of the client.

For example Onestop.net is offering domain registration and a free 5mb space if you register your domain through them, which means that you only pay for the domain fee and yearly renewal to them and nothing else(free web space) and they will ensure payment is made to InterNIC for renewal of the domain.

Yes Chad, I am aware that you get what you pay for and also some registrar and hoster charging ridiculous prices for their services but I am trying to at least get as much a good deal from them as possible(hoster)

Hi Chad, I missed out something.

How do I go about it?

Thanks.

NSS,

E-mail hosts that have a hosting package that you are interested in ... Ask them if they would be willing to deal with making payment for your domain and ask what the stipulations are (most will want some you to sign up for a year in advance and you will want to make sure that they domain is registered in your name).

Some will, some won't...

1) Hosts that don't spam.

2) Hosts that follow their uptime guarantees.

3) Hosts that aren't rude in the customer support section.

4) Hosts that don't lie.

You might be surprised... many hosts don't tell the complete truth on their pages, such as hosts that offer unlimited disk space/bandwidth. You have to examine their policies very carefully to be sure you understand exactly what the limitations are.

Brian,

Haha yup, seen those! We just had a guy ask us why we don't offer unlimited web hosting -- he tried to get us to offer it to him because a competitor does the same. So I showed him the competitor's policy Wink

Ahem!

Great support is probably most important to me. I don't care too much for 24/7 support, but I would rather have friendly support that helps me.

Above all - I want a host that can exceed my expectations.

Well, support for programming languages is important. PHP, Perl, Python, C, Java, etc. Its nice to be able to experiment with more than one.

I like plans $15 to $20. With 100 MB of space. I know might seem high but I just like to have a buffer, and the option without blowing up in package price.

The exspnse of MX chnages, Domain redirection, subdomains etc. very important. Basically flexiblity to do just about anything with whatever package. Hate it where you have to upgraethe package before you can pay for the options.(OLM)

There may be more but thats all Ican think of.

Tech support that doesn't lock the doors when they have a problem. If I'm one of 4 sites on the server and paying $150 per month I want to know why my site has been dead for 30+ hours.

Ahhemmmm.
