DNS = Domain Name Server

To put it short... It's the servers that hold information about what hosts/domains point to what IPs. For example, when you type in google.com in your browser, the DNS tells your computer to go to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (IP address). Domain names are just aliases for IP addresses.

Cost for a domain name ranges from $7US or so to $50 for some country domain names, and more for speciality domain names like .biz, .info and .tv.

godaddy.com for more information on the most common ones.

How important? Very. They are the hook for people to know how to find your site.
