UK web hosting has its headquarters/data centers in the United Kingdom(England) Sometimes recognized with a .uk or .co.uk domain
US web hosting has its headquarters/data centers in the United States Sometimes recognized with a .us domain
Canadian web hosting has its headquarters/data centers in Canada Sometimes recognized by a .ca domain
Other than that there is little difference except what you see in almost all hosting companies having different hardware, plans, and customer service.
Hope that answers your question.

location of your server does not matter, except perhaps in countries with tight internet controls

There should not be any notable difference in quality of service provided by US/UK companies.

I like UK based hosting because i am from the UK. I prefer to host my sites using the US data centers because a majority of my website traffic tends to come the USA.
I find that the data centre location of your website hosting is best to be closer to the audience you may be trying to reach.
I have access through my hosting provider to UK and USA datacentre and can change it every now and then.

You will find if you are UK based company who hosts their site in America with a .com domain name then you will not appear in a search on Google.co.uk pages from the UK, if you have a .co.uk TLD then it will be OK to host in the US.
I prefer to Host UK sites on UK servers, you can't go wrong then.

No there is as such no difference in service. all are same, with a little modifications in the costing. I can explain it to you with an example. They are just like the telecom service providers, that are all functionally same, but has separate brand names, locations, towers, and plans. I hope now it is clear for you.

In my experience it's cheaper in dollars than in pounds.
It's not all that straight forward though.
If you do a whois for sites hosted by UK based hosting companies, you'll find that for price reasons, many of their actual servers are in Germany.
Similarly, for most of my .com sites I've used a cheap Canadian based hosting company for years, but all their servers are actually in the USA.
Google (and possibly others) does take note of where a server is, so if you are wanting the majority of your customers to come from the UK, it's good SEO practice to get a .co.uk name with a uk based server.
Similarly, if you want to target the USA, it's best to get a .com address that's actually hosted in the USA.

Generally UK web hosting tends to be more specialised and more expensive.
I used UKlinux.net for eight or nine years and they cost me around 300 GBP per year.
For the last year or so I've been using hostmonster and am very happy with their service so far. Plus they are around 70 USD per year. See the link in my sig for what they offer.
UKlinux were fairly inexpensive at the time I joined them, but prices elsewhere have come down dramatically.

i don't think that the location of any server matters too much but I would still prefer to have US web hosting because of its popularity and reliability

By the way, I think that any US-based hosting provider can provide a great accessibility to your websites around the whole globe.
