Two questions about domain names and my website

Greetings to All.

I have two questions which I have not been able to find answers to anywhere on the net and wonder if anyone here can help me. I have no real knowledge of website building except the little HTML I have been able to learn by editing the code of my website once the pages are built, writing in scripts, etc., so any complicated stuff would have to be explained to me in details.

Ok. I have a free website at uk.geocities.yahoo.com, and would like to get another domain name for it as uk.geocities.com/myname.html is a bit difficult for people to remember.

I could do one of two things, I could get a free co.cc, co.nr, .tk or similar domain name, or I could find a good domain name registration company offering top level domain names for 2, 3 or 5 years really cheaply (I don't have a huge budget and it's a not-for-profit website) so that I don't have to bother with renewing the domain name for a while.

My questions are the following:
1) Given that some "free" domain name providers require a certain level of traffic to one's website in order for one to keep the domain name, if I decided to go for the free domain name of co.cc, co.nr, .tk etc., for how long would I be able to keep this? Are these "for life" (barring their requiring a certain amount of traffic, etc.)?

2) The actual index.htm page of my site is just a simple welcome page with just the name of the website on it and an "Enter" button. I don't mind getting rid of it if necessary, but I would really prefer to keep it, and that is the page to which I hope my domain name will lead my visitors. How will getting a new domain name affect my pages appearing in search engines?

At the moment, my website has about 6 pages loaded with a moderate to large amount of information and links.

Sorry that this is so long and hope it makes sense, and that someone will be able to help me with this.

Best,
SW

For such details you should contact the administration of the place where you'rу going to get a domain name. They must have some sort of a support ticket, I guess.

I guess the own domain name is always better for seo, than any subdomains, add-on domains, or parts of other websites. You may have to adjust something, but not very much I guess.

Good morning and thanks a lot, Dangerous. I might just decide to transfer my site somewhere where own domains are allowed, so this might come in handy.

I just extended my post as I am considering some free re-direction service which may meet Geocities requirement of their URL being displayed, so I'll investigate.

I'll be back...

Greetings again....

Ok, fellows, sorry. I just realised that Yahoo Geocities free service doesn't allow people to use their own domain name, one needs to upgrade to Plus.

But what about a free URL redirect service that doesn't mask the original URL, but which people could use to get to the site if they forget the long Geocities URL or that I can give out as a shorter site address so that I don't have to write the whole long host address thing, even if the original URL appears in the location box of the visitors' browsers once they have reached the site? Is that allowed?

In that case I suppose I will just submit my website to search engines with the Geocities URL only, so that if people search my keywords or tags they will find it anyway.

Any opinions welcome!

Thanks.

This is possible. You just need to get a domain, park it, and enable 301 redirect (by yourself or ask admins of the parking service provider).

I do not think this might be forbidden, however, first make sure your host allows this.

I see no reasons not to do that. Just find out if it's allowed by the host.

Own project have to have own domain name. With free domain names (the ones you will never asked for the payment) on the third level you have a chance to lose all your efforts. That is not expensive to have own domain name. Moreover some of the web hosting providers include free domain name to the time bing with them and then once you need to move they will give you domain name and you will pay for that yourself.
Check webhostingbuzz.com . I remember they used to include free domain name as bonus to their packages.
Good luck

I have had a site at GeoCities Free for over 10 years, since way before Yahoo! acquired it.

I actually filled up the alotted space finally, and rather than upgrade on Yahoo! which I thought was not a good deal, I maintain that site as an archive of "netsperience 1.0" and I am building a new site in Drupal - netsperience 2.x

GeoCities Free does not offer PHP or MySQL support so v 1.0 is a good example of the capabilities of JavaScript and client-side scripting.

These days, you would certainly want a database for a dynamic CMS site, unless you have just a brochure site.

I have an account at http://free-space.net that does provide PHP/MySQL for free without ads, I believe you can bring your own domain.

However, I don't use this account, I have hosting accounts with Blue Host and Hot Drupal and LiquidNet (my hosting reseller account) - and I fled from StartLogic.

A domain name will cost between $7 - $20 depending on the extension, I think it is a worthwhile investment rather than worry about requirements for some kind of free deal.

Answer to your 1st question is that, you will not get the name for life, you will own that as long as you provide the asked site with traffic. Also it is better if you put the same question before the admin of the site offering the free domains.

The answer to the 2nd question is that, google will show the 1st page of your site with the enter button, inspite of taking a new domain name.
