Transferring Registrars and Ownership
I've got a client (co-worker) who registered his website with Register.com and apparently got ripped off paying $35. I'm going to make his site and host it. I use GoDaddy.com and I'm very happy with them and I suggested to him that the best thing to do is to extend it another year by transferring his registrar to GoDaddy.com. But it would be easier for him to not have to register his own account at GoDaddy, and just put it on my tab.
Questions:
1. I've heard bad stories about Yahoo Domains and how they make it difficult or impossible to transfer to another registrar. Anybody have any problems with getting trying to leave Reegister.com?
2. All of my other clients were registered by me under my name (for simplicity). If he transferred the registrar to me UNDER MY ACCOUNT would that technically count as a change in ownership? I would think so since I'd then have to pay because it's my account. Does that complicate things? I'v never transferred ownership and registrar together before.
3. When you transfer ownership (either to me or away from me), are there any additional charges?

If you transfer from one registrar to another without changing ownership, it should be no problem although the new registrar may charge you a fee, usually $7-$8, then add an additional year to your registration. This is the way I would go. Once you have it at the new registrar, you can then easily push that domain to the new owner with ease and at no charge. Hope this helps you.

I've transferred out of Register.com and everything went fine. Transfers are always a pain and can encounter problems, but in my experience Register is no worse than anyone else.
