Thinking of reselling...

I have recommended my host to several people and brought over about four accounts now, but the service has gone waaaaay downhill. My php mail has not been delivered in weeks (and it is being blamed on the server being marked for spam which may be legitimate, but it is still an extreme inconvenience!), the server speed is slow at times and I'm just not getting the service I feel I should be. I am thinking of doing a reseller thing on a dedicated server somewhere, but I'm not sure what that involves. I feel like I could probably bring over the accounts I've already set up with him because they're all disappointed in the service at this point. BUT, I'm not a programmer. I am able to navigate cPanel very well and have helped set up some sites for friends, but I couldn't set up the server. That would have to be done and I'd have to be able to navigate it much like I do my sites with cPanel now. So, can someone tell me how that works? How does a dedicated server come set up? Are there any affordable companies that you could recommend for this? Between the five sites I could bring, we'd have about 60 GB of data and 500-750 GB of data transfer.

Thanks

Why not get get a reseller account on a good host, find sites that never seem to go down and try find out the host. The host TWF is on for example has been good, can't remember any real down time apart from human adjustment.

With a reseller at least the buck stops with your host and not you. You can also learn a few tricks while doing it and later on go dedicated (which requires a lot more time as you have to update and fix problems - you are the host.
Also resellers on some hosts forums have seperate sections in the forums and you may be able to pick the brains of people who may have used dedicated servers in the past or still do.

A reseller account would be great. Right now, in order to do that, I need to have at least 25 gigs of disk space and 200 gigs of data transfer to support what I need to support and that's only carrying the two sites that I admin. I can say also, though, that I know one more site will come with me and it will be another account that will need about half of what I need and I do help with the admin, but might be better off to let her actually pay for the hosting herself. So, any suggestions? I don't mind PM offers, but I need someone with a proven support record because I am not moving again...

25gigs, dang
dedicated would be cheaper and the way to go then.

Maybe try a few web hosts that offer dedicated servers, some allow guests to post on their boards, others only open to members, but if you email them and explain what you're doing they may give you access, after all you could be a new client.

good luck

Dedicated is usually the best way to go as a reseller. It's difficult to offer managed services when you don't have full control.

However, I'm not sure I can be trusted with full control, LOL. I know my way around cPanel pretty well and can install a mean vBulletin forum, but as far as actually doing the admin on a dedicated server, I might be over my head. I'd rather buy the space from someone who knows what they're doing and just be the admin because it's not even my full time job...I don't need to have to be the end of the line for trouble, I still want someone to cry to when things aren't working right Smiling .
