Say I have a bunch of servers in a full cabinet that I rent from some colocation company. How is the cabinet setup? I have a Cat6 cable coming from the provider, and where does it go? In a switch or a router?

I made two really fancy diagram to show what I'm talking about
Diagram 1
Diagram 2

So do I just need a switch or a router too?

I'm a bit of a n00b in this area of server setup. Think it's diagram two though, you might want to throw a firewall in there as well and only allow database connections to your DB server from the Web host, e.g. restrict port 3306 on your DB server to only allow connections from the Web server (assuming MySQL port number).

Think a Linux box with two network cards and Webmin would be pretty well suited to the router/firewall task. I'd plump for Debian (as I know Webmin plays well with it), but any distro should work.

Here's a picture of a firewall to help you see what I mean.
