screaming.net - Anyone in the uk have info ?
Does anyone out there have any info on new UK ISP screaming.net?
(see: http://www.tempo.co.uk)
This is the first UK ISP to offer a genuinely free service with free on-line time. I'm considering signing up for the benefit of free internet calls from 6pm to 8am weekdays and all weekend. However, I'm a little concerned at having to transfer my phone company from BT to Localtel. It really does sound too good to be true and I'm wondering if there are any hidden catches...
What do you think? I'm sorely tempted to sign-up. Or should I go for a paid-for ISP and hefty phonebills?

ooo, thanks JP
I'd really appreciate your advice on this! I might just give it a whirl and see. Apparently BT are now offering 0800 access with their paid-for service too...but it's certainly not as good as the screaming.net deal.
Maybe some more ISPs and Telcos will catch onto this free calls idea. Who knows?
Thnks for your help. I'd love to know what Localtel say!
Keeti
(I'm in good ol' London, BTW...where are you?)

OK, as promised here is my opinion...
- I was suitably impressed, enough so to head over to Tempo and grab myself a CD so I could read the small print and test out the speed etc.
I will shortly ring LocalTel up and ask for details of their services.
If you make the plunge please keep me updated.
Where in the UK are you located by the way?
cheers,
JP

I'm just on hold to Localtel now
BT offer a no monthly fee [BT Click] deal where you only pay for local calls.
I have never heard of the 0800 access offer you are talking about, please give me some details...
I'm also in London, just off Maida Vale.
**at last got through to localtel**
It seems, as I thought, that they simply rent the lines of BT. There is no charge to change to and off localtel. Everything is 10% cheaper including friends and family schemes. Free calls 6pm to 8am weekdays/free all weekend. You can cancel your agreement at any time.
My opinion is that you should go for it, I might myself.
Please keep us updated...
Thanks CWebNetCo, I try my best
cheers,
JP

Look through the articles at http://www.theregister.co.uk/ from about a week ago. There was one about the service at Screaming.net; they gave some incredible numbers like estimated download times of 1 month for a 5 meg file at peak times.

But any UK residents might find this http://www.theregister.co.uk/990714-000007.html of interest.
