This is scary!!!!!!!!
I was reading articles in eboz when I came across this one -
http://www.eboz.com/articles/misc/118.shtml
A really scary story about one person's experience with Burlee.
What interests me is the conclusion in the end of the story that companies that offer unlimited traffic can throw out accounts and terminate them without notice and in such violent ways.
I am currently using Westhost and am quite satisfied. I just started a third account with them which I hope will generate lots of traffic... They have unlimited traffic feature but that is not why I chose them.
What do you think?

I think you will find most people that will tell you there is no such thing as unlimited! Probably somewhere on their site there is a limit stated and if not it might be wise just to ask them straight-forwardly what their actual bandwidth transfer is per account, per month? Would they allow you a transfer of 30GB per month?? I highly doubt it.
best of luck

Agreed. Nothing is unlimited.
But it also depends often what type of site it is. If you build a really successful large e-commerce site it would be dumb (if not criminal) of a host to drop you just for having "too much" (by whatever definition is used) traffic. They may want you to pay extra for it but if you're that successful chances are the few dollars more per month for extra transfer gigs will be affordable.
OTOH, If you just have a really popular phot album site they may ask you to reduce it's size or find another host.

Just remember that even though you may not use the "unlimited" traffic that they offer, but others might. If you get stuck on a server with others that are using the maximum allowed traffic settings then you will feel the effects...

Well, I read the post (Burlee) and it's pretty good. (well, I mean it's a detailed article)

Any hosting company nowadays can cencell (and do sometimes) your account even if they don't offer unlimited bandwidth or storage. Usually it only happens when you violate their TOS or privacy statement or something though.

Hi,
I have been watching and reviewing Burlee for over a year. They are generally considered a much better than average Web Host. They have their detractors, and they have negative comments here and there on the Internet, but by and large, they are one of the better Web Hosts I have seen.
Their unlimited space and traffic Web Host plans has its caveats, but if you follow their rules you can create very large web sites. Last year when we first reviewed them, I recall an e-commerce store that was over 300 MBs at one time, using a ton of bandwidth and they were still only paying $14.95 a month.
We review over 100 Web Hosts a month with an independent review panel at WebHostMagazine.com, and believe me, we have seen the best and worst of Web Hosts. We do our best to help developers get to the bottom of problems they have with Web Hosts, but generally, it comes down to a communication problem that started the mess. In many cases the Web Host doesn't do a very good job explaining their features. In other cases a developer doesn’t read the rules. And in some cases, the Web Host is just plain bad... period.
In the three or four cases we have had where someone has complained about Burlee, it was always resolved to everyone's satisfaction. Burlee has been very good at helping out. Our review panel does cold calling and emailing to check out things like support and response times and answers to various types of questions, and Burlee has always ranked high in that category.
On the Internet, it is easy for someone who has a difference of opinion to instantly tell the world they were burned. It is always easier to complain than give praise. And when we hear praise, we almost always think the guy, or gal, is working for the company. In many cases they do not give the whole story and you never get a chance to see the Web Host's rebuttal to the issue.

yeah most hosts scam on the bandwidth. Either they will overload the server so your site is slow and then tell you use all the bandwidth or they will charge you for it. I found a good host that I am with now and have had no problems. If you want to check it out, its http://www.mybizhosting.com
They don't play around with the bandwidth bs, they offer resonably prices plans and offer good support, and the president helped me with my PHP code I had.

Good try Lynch1... but...
I was not trying hide my identity or anything. My name is right out there for people to know who I am. Many people who know me in the Web Host industry know that I did some marketing consulting for Burlee several years ago. People can see my name and the fact that I am editor of WebHostMagazine.com. It is right there for all to see.
I am not perfect. I have my opinions, but to read anything sinister into what I wrote (you implied "Advert") is misguided. If I were going to advertise for them, or conversely, run them down, I could do so a little easier by making my identity less well known to everyone.
Lots of people come up here with assumed identities and trash others. I did not do that.
My current opinion about Burlee has NOTHING to do with some consulting work I did for them several years ago. They are a vastly different company now. Despite that, what I said was true.
* I have been working in the Web Host industry for years now and I have watched it grow and have some good insights and lots and lots of friends in many Web Host and Web Host Finder related companies. Every one of the people I have dealt with knows that I have VERY strong opinions about companies and practices in the industry and I have no problem discussing them from my experience and point of view.
* I never said that my opinion about Burlee was independent. But I did say we did independent reviews of Burlee. As we do with other Web Hosts and Web Host Finders.
* Burlee IS considered one of the better hosts in the business. I am not the only one who considers them one of the better hosts. But it is MY opinion and I will stand by it.
* Their unlimited space and traffic Web Host plans DOES have its caveats (as I said) - but it CAN work too! I have had email discussions with developers who have done it. Again, this is long after I did consulting for them. The important thing is, people have to decide for themselves, and let others know what their true opinions are.
* If anyone were to look at our FastTrack Hosts table which lists ALL of the Web Hosts that the Web Host Finders sites pick as the top hosts each month (http://www.webhostmagazine.com/ft/index.asp) they would see that Burlee is always one of the top Web Hosts picked... every month. I said nothing new.
* You failed to mention that the your company (WebHostDir.com) always picks Burlee in more than one category every month without independent review.
* WebHostMagazine.com's independent panel reviews well over 100 Web Hosts AND Web Host Finders sites a month AND if you take a look at our reviews at http://www.webhostmagazine.com you'll even see that we mention whether an award winner is an advertiser in each review. I think readers here will find that our reviews are more than fair.
* I should mention that I have nothing to do with the reviews. Nor does any of our paid staff. We have a panel of independent volunteers do it all. They do not work for the Web Host companies or Web Host Finders. When they have a problem with a Host, you'll read about it in their review. We list three sets of comments along with our HostFactor Ratings for each reviewer. We do not select skeptics, nor optimists to review on the panel... just objective people.
*If anyone reading this wants to do reviews for us, contact me. You’ll see what we go through.
* We do receive complaints from people about Burlee. We have complaints about a lot of Web Hosts. We do everything we can to get the Web Host to address the issues and almost always it is a problem with communication.
* We have had complaints about your company too and I dealt with them in the same manner. People sometimes complain without knowing the facts.
* No Web Host is perfect. Burlee isn't perfect. I got interested in the Web Host industry years ago partially because my Internet company was almost taken down by a REALLY bad web host. If you have read editorials in the past at WebHostMagazine.com you'd know this.
In Summary:
I have NO problem with what I said – it was not advertising.
I will stand behind what I said
I am not hiding behind my handle here.
I will continue to state my opinions, with my real name on each opinion, and if someone has another opinion, that is ok with me. However, to assume that I am advertising for any company is absurd.
You can go online at http://www.webhostmagazine.com and get the whole idea of what our opinions are right there in black and white.
We take great pride in our independent reviews and welcome dissenting points of view.
