Rather dumb question!

Hi,

Currently my website is running on a free host. This is for testing purposes and feedback as the site is not finished. I plan on buying a domain name and a package from a host, but I'm afraid that I won't be able to transfer all the information I have on my free webhost to my new webhost.

The site runs on a the script GameSiteScript (uses a database and PHP). Obviously I've never done this before; so -- can this be done? Should I just copy all files at their current state, change the database information, and reupload on the new server? Or will I have to reinstall the script from scratch and then reupload all the games and images?

Thanks for your time
(because I'm sure I just wasted it!)

Yes you shoul reinstall and upload all files with it, and install the db that comes with it... or if you buy the hosting with your current free one, they will be glad to just upgrade your current free hosting to a paid one without reinstalling anything...

Ah, thats something I didn't want to hear. Being this is a gaming website, reinstalling each game file manually (through the script's uploader) takes about a minute per file (adding descriptions, titles, and the upload times), and then you can times that by 140 (how many I've uploaded). Not fun!

I'm wondering if you can simply upload all the .swf and .png files into the directories they would install to (if I were to use the script's uploader), and then upload the SQL commands that would bring the site on the new server to what it is on the free server.

Except I'm not positive if this would work or how to obtain the SQL commands.

So my easiest route would be to upgrade on my current host, and that's not really something I want to do as the bandwidth offered on AS is almost nothing compared to other hosts out there.

Thanks for your help.

You could try following the folder structure of your current install of the gaming script, backup the db to transfer to another host, then imitate the folder structure on that new host, although theres a 50/50 chance it will work... Try to visit the site of your game script for your site, try to look for migration instructions, that should help...

As long as the urls in the site aren't absolute ex http://freehost/you/game.swf, you won't have any problems moving it over. Just make sure your file structure is the same.
