Question About Data Transfer Allowances

Hi,

Just joined, I need help. I just had to move my popular site to a new location, I have my own domain name, and I've already acceeded my Data Transfer Allowance. I can't find any info on what happens when one does that on my server.

Can anyone tell me what usually happens in cases like this?

I've very concerned.

hey Sonja Marie - I understand your concern - it may be that you'll be subject to additional charges if you exceed your transfer limit - hopefully, not too much Sad - I have no experience with this issue, but you might want to contact your host and :whine: - maybe they'll be willing to forgo "soaking" you too badly

there are 2 ways hosts normally go,
1) they bill you for the extra bandwidth, if this is a regular thing (or going to be) it will be worth your while to upgrade your account with them to one that has more allowance.
2) they suspend your account & your homepage turns into a "this user has exceeded their transfer limit" page.

You should contact your host as soon as possible to find out about any additional charges, some hosts are quite expensive for this, I think around $3 per gb is normal and acceptable.

Thank you for the replies!

I've decided on a course of action.

I can't really afford more money to pay for the BW, and a person I was talking to about this has offered me space on a server he owns himself and no limit on BW.

I already contacted my hosts support, but being the weekend, I may not hear from them until Monday.

I only paid a special price of 29.99 a year for 500mb of space, that if I can't get a refund, that's all I'm out of, plus whatever they may charge in additional BW cost. The site is still up, so unless they just don't realize I've exceeded or they charge for that type of thing.

If I had known that 250 was all I was going to get a month I would've kept looking, you know!

But the place I had been for 4+ years, and totally free for me, told me last Friday that he can't afford hosting anyone anymore and so me and everyone else he hosted had to move. I was desperate, and I thought I was getting a good deal at my new place (a tech friend suggested it).

Just going to have to chalk this up to a bad mistake, take this all as a learning the hard way experience and move on.

Thankfully I can take my domain name with me!

I'll let you know what happens when I find out more myself.

Sonja Marie.

Good luck..

I have heard a few horror stories regarding bandwidth charges in my time. It is one of the most important things I look at when searching for a host. If they seem cagey about the charges at all, I run away!

Most hosts have additional charges when you exceed alotted bandwidth, its anywhere from $1.50-$6 per GB over.
