overselling server space? long-term problem?

Hi there.

Well, I've been reading through the posts on other threads on this board, and I am more confused than ever about finding a good host lol.

Here's the deal: I transferred my site (finally) to its own name, off of Geocities, and originally went with ATOM hosting. Well, that was pitiful. To make a long story short, they disabled my account without warning, told me that if I paid more $ for extra bandwidth they would reinstate, I did that, they disabled the account AGAIN, told me that they goofed and would reinstate again, and then cancelled my account two days later, telling me that they could not, after all, sell me more bandwidth. All right, so I went back to hostindex.com, found OCHosting, and am now in a bind with THEM.

OCHosting: now, I must say, the support service has been fantastic. Except for the live Java chat (which is next to worthless, since you can never seem to actually get ahead in the queue), I can say in all fairness that the phone support, as well as the live sales support chat people have been absolutely wonderful. The problem with OCHosting for me is that I have had a problem writing to the server here lately. Not once, not twice, but THREE times in two weeks have I had my data.txt files wiped out because the server disk was full. This last time (just this morning), I lost over 240 user-input entries to a script that I am running on my site -- user information, passwords, messages, EVERYTHING. Sad Their answer to the problem has been to partition the hard drive -- not to add any more space to it. Does this sound like a good practice to anyone?

So, my question is this: is this *disk full* problem something that will be indicative of long-term problems, and should I be looking for another host? And if I should be looking for a new host, has anyone heard anything about http://www.superwebhost.com? I looked into http://www.hosting4less, and it looks like a good enough deal, but to be quite honest, now that I have had TWO nasty experiences in a month, I am not eager to commit to anything more than a month at a time at this point -- and definitely not eager to commit without a money-back guarantee. I need something similar to what I am paying now -- about $20 - $25/mo. with full cgi access and SSI support -- someone with 24 hour tech support would also be a *definite* plus.

Thanks for a response, and forgive my ignorance on the *server full* issue! Smiling

Hi,

From my experience, I have not heard of a "disk full" but of course you have to pay for extra bandwidth if you exceed your quota and also the HOST provided a certain amount of allocated space when you sign up and if you exceed your space then you may be asked to pay more.

Look for a HOST that meet your requirements, and also try to estimate how much space you need for your files and for future expansion and also the traffic expected. Most HOST provide a record log file for your account so you can check how much disk space and bandwidth you are using.

Try http://www.dids.com .... This board is hosted by them and they are very reliable and the best value for your money in looking for a perfect HOST.

I agree with NSS that I've never heard of a disk full problem with a host unless the servers they are using are very limited resourced or they've crammed so many sites on one server.

Bandwidth is another issue. You didn't say how much bandwidth you used. It would also help to know how much disk space you site has used too.

Depending on the disk space and bandwidth requirements you may have to go to a dedicated server.

Actually, it supposedly isn't a problem with *my* site, it is a problem with the server that my site is housed on. Supposedly, they needed to partition the disk three times now to make more room on the shared server. They have given me 400MB of space, and I am nowhere near that amount. They've also given me 20GB of bandwidth as well, and again, I am nowhere near that. The problem arose when I went to upload via ftp one day using Absolute Ftp, and got an error message saying "unable to write to disk -- disk is full." Sure enough, when I called tech support, they told me that there was no more room on the server.

Then move with all possible speed. Any host that's so short on hardware that their servers are full is one that you want to be as far away from as quickly as humanly possible. I don't have any firsthand experience with either of your next choices, but neither of them fills me with confidence. Superwebhost is one of the famous "unlimited unless you need it" hosts. From their FAQ:

Quote:
Unlimited bandwidth is for normal small to medium business web sites. The reason we offer unlimited bandwidth is to provide business sites an inclusive service without extra charges. Some sites do require higher than normal resources and can reduce the performance of other sites hosted with us. We reserve the right to place limits on extreme or excessive usage.

So they're lying to you before they have your credit card number. Think it'll get any better after they have it?

Hosting4less isn't much better. If they're truly offering 25GB of transfer on a $24.95 package, don't expect them to be in business 6 months from now. Always beware of hosts that offer more than can be reasonably delivered. If somebody on a streetcorner is selling "genuine" Rolex watches for $20, it's wise to smell a rat. That holds true in hosting too. You didn't say what your storage and bandwidth requirements are, but for $20 you can get a decent package at a good host like FutureQuest.net or dids.com as long as your needs are reasonable. If you're one of those that needs 200MB of space and 20GB of transfer and expects that to happen for $20 to $25 dollars, than all I can do is wish you a lot of luck in finding it from an honest host.

The following hosts are all very recommended:

http://www.hostrocket.com
http://www.thinkhost.com
http://www.hostmatters.com
http://www.hostgo.com

I recommend HostRocket.com the most. I have been with them since November and have had no serious problems. Anything that was bothering me, they changed it quickly and kindly. Their support is good, their prices are low, and you get a lot of features for the price.

If you want an honest host look at http://www.wwsi.net/
I know the owner and am hosted with them. They are very reliable and the prices are very good too.
