opinions on hosts
some of you have helped me in finding tricks to make a demo site, but now that i have a full time job and figure i need to ride outthe depression before i can fid something full time in cs, i'm considering making it an actual site.
i already got the domain so i wouldn't have to deal with issues if someoene else bought it and did something and foundout aboutthe demo site, but the current host is only good as a demo site since it's an old computer i had lying around.
my main concern now is finding a reliable host.
my requirements are php (developed on a host running 4.2.2) and mysql (developed on a host running 3.23.56)
i'm looking for anything anyone wants to say about the reliability of hosts out there
POSIX. because a stable os that doesn't have memory leaks and isn't buggy is always good.

You could do some searches on some hosting directories Customer reviews reveal a lot. Also, if you want reliable, I suggest trying a comapny you can either call, or responds quickly to your support emails. Test their support. Of course, ask folks you know in person who they host with. If they are happy with it, I'd give them a try.

Yes, your best bet is to check with friends about there experiences...
If you can't (or don't know anyone else personally who has a website..), then I would suggest dropped a few emails to some hosts who you read decent reviews on (ask tech and sales questions) and gauge there response.
If they do have a support phone number, all the better, but expect to pay for it..

There are many good hosts available. A couple good links for finding them are:
http://www.hostingassured.findmyhosting.com/
http://www.webhostingratings.com/
http://www.webhostingmall.com
Once you find one that you think looks good, do a search on the name to see if there are a lot of bad posts about them. Might be a good idea to search their name on this and some other forums.
As iBold mentioned, recommendation from a friend is always a good way.
good luck.
