Okay...almost decided but...doteasy, dreamhost, virtualave.net,
I had read the reviews at freehost..virtualave.net stacks up okay if you can put up with banners or popups.
They also offer full cgi, FTP and coupled with good reports looks like a winner...however all you get is 20MB and 2MB file limit, one email per account.
They do throw in 12 engine registration though.
The adds can be disabled for $10/mnth.
Doteasy came up somewhere but I cant find any reviews.
It offers 20MB free domain hosting without adds but add on $35 one off for transfer/setup + another $5/month for cgi..(I think minimum 12months registration) and if you want CGI+MySQL+PHP it'll be $20/month and I'm not sure if that's for a secure server either.
Their claim is that adds are distributed through their daily newsletter to members. No Gig Limit yet...
Dreamhost isnt free but no adds for $9.95 (12month registration) 60MB. Adds are through the control panel access for site management. Packaged CGI's and SSI and 2GB limit.
For $20/month you get fullCGI+125MB 5GB limit and site stats, 10emails, 5subs etc...but its $20/mnth and they are only packaged CGI's (I think).
Had a look at Tripod but the reviews at freewebhosts were'nt glowing, virtual ave rated higher.
All of these seem to be Unix based - cheaper I guess.
Let me know if you have any additional comments or experience.
No mention of backups and property rights maybe someone could shed some light on this.

Depends what you are planning to do with your server.
In general, you get what you pay for.

Well first off, welcome xfmerch! Now, on to the question...
I'd say go with VirtualAVE. They've been around for a while, and have proven that they aren't going anywhere for a while. The others may be good, but if you're planning on paying a free host, then you should just go with a pay host instead. You'll get overall better service in the long-run.

Virtualave is pretty good, and their banner ad is normal size, not huge like some other hosting services.
