NT or Unix/Linux? - Which one? (Posted by Justin Stayton)
I am thinking about choosing CFM Web Hosting, what do you think? They use NT servers, and this is why:
---
With all the debate between UNIX and NT we just had to place this page here. We chose NT servers because of their reliability, efficiency, managability, and the broad range of software it supports.
By using NT servers we have much more control over what is going on. We can easily perform tasks without having to spend a whole lot of time on them. NT is reliable, yes you may say "Well UNIX is better" but quite frankly they are both the same. We don't reboot our machines everyday; there is no need. We reboot them every month just to give NT a clean start and that takes less than 30 seconds.
NT currently supports more software and drivers then UNIX does. Using NT servers we can provide you ASP, ColdFusion, Secure FrontPage 2000 Extensions, PHP access, News Groups, IRC servers and more. While some of those things are also on UNIX they are much more developed and easier to use for you, the customer.
CGI Scripts work the same on both. Perl is not OS dependant, it's an addon. Right now Win32 Perl and Unix Perl are almost exactly alike, maybe one function on UNIX dosen't work on Windows but thats being worked on right now. 99% of scripts now work on both NT and UNIX. If this is one of your concerns, do not let it be one. In fact on UNIX you have to worry about Chmoding and all of that, on NT permissions are set automatically! No need to worry!
NT and UNIX have a heated debate now. We feel after giving UNIX a try that NT is a lot better. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us and we can discuss this further with you.

Anyone know wich O/S is more secure?
Faster?
ASP can also run on Linux/Unix as an add on
I am currently running Linux, I have never had any problems with it. It also has a X Windows interface. The interface doesn't have 'cool opening menu effects' like upcoming windows 2000, but it is free. I can upgrade for free, and there aren't 101 NT service packs to use with it.
Simple, Effective, Easy, and Free
I will stick with Linux as my O/S

Yeah... I always have heard that NT was unstable and stuff, but I did not know if they were true. Anyone use NT?
