No experience, looking for a host

Hello!

I'm new to site design and am not a coder. I'm looking to start with a site that has message boards, photo galleries, blogging/news, etc, and then build from there. I expect light traffic at first, and then hopefully a slow but steady increase.

Since I have no coding skills, I need some easy to use tools to get the site up and running. I do plan to learn HTML and get more sophisticated with the site, but that will be a gradual process that will take time.

Questions:

1- This will seem stupid I'm sure, but I need to ask. If I am running Windows on my pc, do I need a host that is windows based? Or does that matter at all?

2- I've been researching online for about a week now, and think I have narrowed it down to HostGator or ANHosting. Can anybody offer any thoughts on which might be a better choice for me? I'm also still open to any other suggestions if anybody has what they think is a better option.

Thank you in advance for any help/info.

first question: No, your hosting company can be anything you want, doesn't have anything with what your personal computer system is.
you should go for Linux it is cheaper and more reliable then a windows host.

Question 2: You just have to make a search on google "cheap cpanel hosting"

Cpanel because cpanel hosts offer Fantastico with cpanel and you can try to install Drupal from your fantastico, like this you will not need any html or coder experince, Drupal website I think has a blog, a forum, etc, so you can ply around.

If I were you I would find a host charging 2-3 dollars a month.

Good luck.

one of the easiest to use hosting services is 'Yahoo's hosting' it is realitively moderate in pricing, but, alot easier to use than 90% of the other hosting companies. they offer linux based php mysql driven packages with good speed and above average uptime. the hosting package offers almost any script package you are looking for.

for rock bottom pricing and superb uptime theres 'GoDaddy' which offers the same linux based php-mysql, along with windows based asp. the php package offers almost any script package you are looking for.

to answer q#1 no windows doesn't affect which server platform you can use, and for #2 both services are good, but, may depend on your experience level as to how bad the learning curve will be for you.

Windows on your desktop has nothing to do with the choice b/w Linux or Windows hosting, it will rather depend on the site requirements. From what you've written about your future site Linux will meet your needs, being both stable and cost-effective. If you have no coding skills, you may use hosting packages with site-building software included.
Also check if the host you're about to choose offers steady upgrade from one plan to a bigger one once your requirements are changed. All the companies suggested here Hostgator, AHhosting, Ahosting might be worthy choices but make sure their support will help you out when you need it.

Being new to the design and coding, look for somebody with guaranteed support services, someone who will really take care of you not to get lost on the background of other thousands of clients. I'd make search on hosts offered here, i can support ahosting.biz recommended here, I've been with them for about half a year, no major issues.

Hello. Big companies have many customers and might belittle bit inert. I suggest you have a look at companies with a smaller customers base. I'd recomend you visit Webhostingbizz.com. Good company with more than 4 year experience.

I never had luck with godaddy, I canceled cause even customer support was stumped.

Hotgator I have had clients with them and they offer Cpanel with all its goodies. I don't know their prices.

Meccahosting is small and offers plans starting at 2.99 but the panel is very very basic

Assortedinternet has cpanel and plans starting at 4.99, the domains are expensive, but you can buy domains anywhere.

I have found all of the above helpful in support, and great uptime.

I've had clients who used Yahoo in the past, and everything was fine until they decided for one reason or another to switch hosts. They had a *huge* hassle with Yahoo, spending hours on the phone just to get it switched.

As an afterthought, you may just find someone who will design the site for you and then give some recommendations on the type of hosting to choose, or even host you. I can think of emedianow.com and finerdesign.com. if you design to contact and use one of those, let me know what's your opinion of them.

What are the pluses of using webdesign companies vs freelancers? Looks like emedianow.com works with flash design only.

there is no need to choose windows web hosting service if you have windows OS on your machin as you only need to chose web hosting based on your web site requirements. From my experinece eskhosting.com provides reliable solutions, I have chosen them since they don`t offer unlimited everything for a unbelievably low prices and I am ready to pay a bit more but get real service, so this company is highy recommended

I think that answer is simple. If it is possible to do with company like Emedianow.com - why not? If your offline business needs a website - you need just find such kind company and that's all. I think that it is good deal.

Well, do you mean emedianow.com offers both hosting AND design services? Do you think it's good to have a lot of spheres to operate in?
