Hi all. I've got a big problem but I first want to fully understand the situation. Basically, all my sites with this one hosting company have been unavailable for four days (as 7/11/02). Even the host's website is gone now (since just yesterday). It looks like they've gone out of business and taken my money BUT some things make me think twice...

First, I can get into every one of my sites with no problems via FTP programs, but not using a browser (I can't even call up a tiny jpeg using the browser). That sounds wierd to me but that's why I'm asking y'all about this stuff. Second, all my emails set up thru all these domains work flawlessly. Once again, why/how can these function when browsers can't? Please help!

Thank you very much Smiling

P.S. By the time I'm done with this thread I'll have gone into triple posing digits Sticking out tongue

Mike,

If everything is working except your websites, it's most likely their webserver (Apache) that is not working. It wouldn't surprise me if they suddently disappeared though. Too many web hosts these days start out without a business plan. They set their prices way too low and they make a few fast dollars, but after only a few months when that money is gone, so are they.

You should probably start shopping for a more reliable host. I can't believe your sites have been down for 4 days. Even reinstalling Apache does not take longer than 30-60 minutes.

P.S. Congrats on your 100th post Smiling

back up your site now while it's still available and get another host.

it's possible that they have changed colocated servers and haven't set up the new nameservers (could be in transition), but if you have access to the data, back it up, get yourself set up in a new place, and then ask for a refund if you can.

Always keep a full local backup of your files for, amoung other reasons, just such a case as this.

I totally agree with Zollet. People are too impressed with big services and bargin basement prices and don't think about how such services can be offered as such a low price.

Sorry this happened to you.

Do this company actually have their own servers or are they reselling someone elses? I had this happen ages ago with a company that said everything was theirs but then we found out that they didn't actually control the server and they had to wait for the main company to sort out problems etc. Main thing is to make sure you have local copies of everything just in case!!

It looks like your sites are back up Mike. I guess you could let this be a lesson to you. Try keep an updated backup of your files and database at all times on a local machine or a CDRW if you have that.

Yes, I was jst coming here to update the situation. They just came back online so they apparently didn't go out of business. Smiling It's early (since they came back online) but I haven't received any explainations or appology. They didn't have any uptime guarantee but I was okay with that, not thinking 4 consecutive days was possible. Since I'm paid up thru 2003 I'm going to stay put, but I'll be moving somewhere else when that's up!!!

P.S. I found a link on another thread on this site to webhosttalk.com. If I knew then what others said about this host I would've stayed far away.

Thanks everyone.
