in need of hosting
Has anyone heard of/used any of the following?
gearhost.com
carolina.net
novidex.com (UK based, may be to pricey)
redstationhosting.com
ciwebhosting.com
netfirms.com
bizhost4u.com
other options are:
cprhosting.com
nomonthlyfees.com
m6.net
I've been going through hostindex.com and others looking for a host that suits my budget, which isnt helped by the bad exchange rates, but if anyone else knows of any I could check out, requirements are something like (but not set in stone):
100mb minimium
php
mysql
cold fusion (optional)
secure server
mail forwarder
sub domains (optional)
password protected pages
I have to try keep under $15 US a month (35 NZ) unless I win lotto

Hi busy,
I am using mbshost.com and am very pleased so far with the services. you can get all that is on your list below except for cold fusion for that price if you pay anually. why don't you check them out? doesn't hurt to inquire.

as a host myself i can say i have not heard of
redstation or novidex
however the remaining have horrible reputations amongst the hosting community and are big no no's
except for netfirms and gearhost
they seem to be a rather good host with helpfull staff and knowledgable support
gearhost is going threw some major growing pains now and are just offering windows hosting from what i have heard gearhost has some really smart windows tech guys, and is also working hard on unix plans
i would choose gearhost or netfirms out of your list
I do not use netscape nor care if my stuff works or doesnt in it.

are you kidding? Netfirms sucks.
I had a client with them, the ftp was brutal, the cgi was massively crippled. It took me ages to upload files to the account -- I had to at one point upload files no bigger than 5K one at a time. I got my client out of there in a jiffy.
No Monthly Fees has good and bad -- some limitations in MySQL, basically fine, not for people who don't know what they are talking about. I've been with them since November 1999, no significant issues -- others have had massive issues.
I have a client with infinology.com, but their control panel is daft and they are hard to talk to if you're out of the US (I'm in Canada). I wouldn't recommend them. While the hosting seems adequate, the support and access sucks.

I personally use Hostmatters. They give fabulous support and have a real good support forum. Their closest plan to what you want is $16/mo. for 125MB. They would have all of your other requirement except for Coldfusion which is too pricey for most hosts. Also if you have several accounts, then the way to go is become a reseller since your price for the various plans is cut in half.
Another good resource for all of your hosting needs is Webhostingtalk. You can both ask questions about hosts and also submit a request for hosting that other hosts will kind of bid on.

Thanks all for the replies
Wish choosing a host was as easy as 123
things like cold fusion, asp etc I dont know at the moment but hope to venture into later on so I'm trying to get as much as I can for my dollar, which the exchange rate doesnt help, about 40cents to the US dollar
even trying to find a domain name isnt easy, i've tried at least 100 names so far, no way am I paying more than the standard rate for a name lol (yeah I know I'm a cheap skate )

Busy,
I know how it is to try and get good hosting. Here in Australia the hosts are all v.expensive and the offerings are not that grand. I am with seem.co.uk and they are ok, bit of downtime i am not happy about though.
All I will say is dont forget UK hosting. Simple reason, they are cheaper with exchange rates taken in to account for people like you and I in the southern hemisphere.

http://www.venturesonline.com is the best host I've ever been with, and I've been with quite a few over the years. I promise you won't find an unhappy customer, it's incredible how much these guys are liked. And for good reason.

I think dim8.net is real good. The only problem is that the basic package does not support ASP. For 50 bucks a year you get CGI/MySQL databage, control panel. I have been using them for a year now an they have been pretty good.
They answer very quickly to the customers questions and concerns. This is what I believe, unless someone else believes the contrary.

Thanks for the links, I'll be sure to check them out
I've narrowed it down to about 5 so far, but am stuck on a domain name at the moment, have only checked about 100 so far lol hopefully can find one that relates to my sites soon.
I've been asked to post who I decide on and why, so I will once I'm up and running, but I can say now that with exchange rates the way they are, price will be a big factor.

magicz.com is really good. Their support is ace... and they also charge in NZD if you want Their NZ website URL is http://www.magicz.co.nz
Gearhost is also good. They have very good prices, but if you dont live in the US, support is pretty bad cuz they dont respond to requests/emails very fast. If you live in the US you can call them
Gearhost is also Windows hosting... which i dont really like
