So, who are you using for hosting? Are they any good? Any reccomendations?

I need a new host. My site went dowon on Friday (my fault), I corrected the problem but it took them 8 HOURS to get my site back online !!! Unacceptable. They also still have not responded to a trouble ticket I put in a month and a half ago. I wanted to phone them to get attention immediately but guess what? No phone number. Now I will require a phone contact for anyone I'm hosting with. And I will call them to make sure there is actually someone there.

I'm not picky about plans or features or whatever. Standard *nix with PHP & mySQL is fine. Hosting for multiple domains on one account preferred.

PLEASE, NO offers to supply hosting in this thread. I am looking for reccomendations only. Any offers via this thread, PM, or email will be deleted.

Since you're hosting multiple domains, have you considered a reseller account? (I mean reseller as in you get a chunk of diskspace and bandwidth to divide up however you want among domains, not as in you resell their packages, if I'm making that clear.) Once you get into the bigger (i.e. non-starter) plans it's about the same price for the same diskspace and bandwidth. If you're interested I have an account with a host that I would definitely recommend.

I've moved all my sites to my reseller accounts so unfortunately I can't recommend a "regular account" host for you.

Have you tried going through the www.webhostingtalk.com forum? And do you need specifically a Nix platform as you would widen your choice if you included Windows... (not a plug promise)

I have a reseller account over at dixiesys.com, highly recommend them. They aren't the biggest for your buck but the two + years I've been with them have never had a problem. They also have a sister company 8-95.com, same stuff without the 'hand holding'. the sites in my signature are at dixiesys if you want to ping them, but remember I'm on an older ensim server, not the newer direct admin ones.

If you need more space (gigs), I have another host I have been with for a few months that seems pretty good. To soon to recommend thou.

hi,

I would suggest that maybe you should search in some more web hosting directories for more Correct information.

askwebhosting.com
hostplus.com
hostsearch.com
hostbyte.com
findahost.smesource.com

these ones dont have any banners or exchange links etc. and offer pretty good results, just fill in your requirements.

Good Luck with your search Smiling

Cheers,
Ashish

What I want is reccomendations from people I actually know. That's why I'm asking. I don't want to have to dig around in other forums or listing sites to find something suitable. The last time I did that I ended up with the people I have now Sad (and the research took forever). Come on, you all have got to be hosing your sites somewhere!

Thanks for the reccomendation, Busy. I don't have enough sites to really afford a reseller account. Right now I just have the one domain and I don't actually have plans to open another one... so maybe I don't really need that right now... the last time I was looking for hosting I definitely wanted multiple domains but now I can't even remember why.

Well for obvious reasons it's quite hard for me to recommend anyone! Smiling

Megan, the reseller accounts can be as cheap as the normal ones. I only pay $10 US a month and can host as many sites as i want (until i run out of space).

My reseller account at dixisys hosts my 5 sites (with space to spare), I don't actually resell any space. I used to, sold some space (2mb) for $50US a year but the guy was to much of a hassle so dropped him.

I noticed that on the dixisys site. Their site seems very slow. I'm a little concerned. Good rates though. I like the $3.95/month plan. Signing up is a little confusing (just checking it out to make sure thye accept visa). Suzanne told me about another one that might be good but they don't have any ultra-small plans.

Now, the problem is going to be cancelling my old service and getting my money back (since i was payaing by the year and in my rush to get the site back up again I just did the same again.)

Thanks, Busy. And flipper, it's cool just to say that you host your own site. I'm sort of interested to know how many people are doing that.

I have never been with this host (I get hosting from a friend) but I have looked at them for a considerable amount of time. They don't have a # that they post on the site, but I am sure you can get ahold of it someway, since they own their datacenter. Their plans are pretty cheap too. They also have a forum, so you can talk to some of the people they host and see what they think.

Bad timing telling you to ping my sites lol, I ran out of space and bandwidth on my big site (now moved) so were running slow.
I've never had a problem with them running slow on dialup, their homepage isn't 'all that'.
They do except visa (credit card), they used to work through 2checkout but now use their own system. I pay monthly via visa

I'm hosted with Powweb.com... But at the moment they don't do reseller accounts and you can only host one site with them. Subdomains yes whole new domains no.

I think thats their only drawback.

Ha davey boy... was wondering how you found my blog! Wink

I strongly reccomend names.co.uk but I'm kind of biased because I work for them. However saying that, despite the fact I'm an employee I know for a fact that the service is incredibly reliable and I host all of my personal sites with them (including my ecommerce site) and I wouldn't do that if I knew the service wasn't up to much.
