Going to be registering a new website and wondering what the crowd usually goes with Linux or Windows servers?

Wondering whats the difference...

Personally I'd pick a *nix based server anytime. If I had loads of moolah I'd probably fork out for something like an duel G5 Apple Xserve Wink ***(mmmmm dreams)

I could be wrong, but I don't think that ASP is available on *Nix servers, but if you're using php, or neither then that bit doesn't matter.

I think with windows servers they will emulate chmod permissions that are defined on *Nix boxes, but I am not totally sure on that.

With any CGI or Perl scripts you'll have to set the first line to the C:\perl (or whatever) dir instead of the usual one that is for *NIX boxes.

The differences are subtle, even perfornmance is about the same I believe.

But if the difference is IIS vs Apache, then thats a different story, there are a lot more differences there.

There is (was) a program i think by chilisoft that let you do some asp on *nix servers, didn't have everything you'd get from MS. It wasn't free either..

I think Linux servers are generally more cheaper than the Windows alternative.

Why would someone want asp anyway? PHP is free, open-source and equally (if not more) powerful.

I personally think that the performance of 'nix based servers(Linux, BSD) running PHP/MySQL is far better than those running Windows/ASP.NET . Prices are generally better too. It really depends on the host. 'Nix hosts tend to load more users on one machine than Windows because they can.

What it really comes down to is what you need to run. If you need to run apps that only run on SQL Server/ASP, then you will need a Windows Server. If you have PHP/MySQL apps, then go with 'nix. If you don't know which one you need, then go with a 'nix server since there is more free stuff, forums, albums, CMS's that are open-source (free) than there are on the Windows side.
