OUCH!

Are there *no* decent hosts about, or are they all sharks ? I'm getting close to the point of giving up and ditching my site - I can do without the agro which comes every 12 months when it's time to renew a hosting agreement...

Having been shat on by Futurequest, i'm in the market for a new host again... not much time to get organised now so I need your help. I've been looking at site5.com but they offer far too much for far too little (and don't respond quick enough to my email for my liking) and interland.com

Does anyone here have any experience with Interland ? They seem to be OK, but they don't offer a lot of information on their site. I'm looking for MySQL/PHP for vBulletin, as well as a *sensible* amount of CGI use permitted - which is what lets FQ down. Good support is essential, as is good uptime and download speed.

Thoughts please, folks. Oh, it'll be the Feature Plus plan i'll be going for if they're OK...

No, I don't think you should ditch your site just because you can't find a host. Why not try CommuniTech? Or OLM? Or CI Host? Those have all been around for a while and, besides CI Host, all have good records...

I've heard horror stories about Communitech and CI Host. I'll certainly take a look at OLM though, thanks... even though they seem to offer a laughable amount of bandwidth. I'll dig a little deeper and see what sort of deal they can do for me.

OLM is one of the better ones ot there as far as I have read. The one problem you may have is bandwidth. They don't offer too much to begin with (as compared to other providers), but for most sites it would work just fine. What is unfortunate, is how much they charge for addl. bandwidth ($20/g)

You can find cheaper, but they are good (only from what I have read, which is quite extensive).

Well I’d have to disagree that there are no decent hosts. If you’re absolutely fed up try contacting a local ISP. Most will host your web site for a somewhat reasonable price per month and they'll provide personal tech support. Of course you won’t get all the extra features, but you’ll speak to the same few guys and you know where they are located if they screw up.

OLM – I’ve never developed a site on their server. However I’ve had two clients who had accounts with them prior to hiring me. Both of them are now with HostWay.

Interland – I’ve had good luck with Interland. Their tech support is very well trained and fast from my experience. I have two good size sites with them, one with over 800MB of data and an intensive mySQL/PHP backend. They are very commercial, but that’s their business strategy. It seems to be working for them. Your right about them not listing a lot on their web site, however if you call them they’ll tell you exactly what they support.

CommuniTech – This is my companies web host and I also have a few clients with them (around 5). So far I’ve only called them once and that was a non-support issue (getting prices for a dedicated server). Emailed them a few times for support and they responded within a few hours. Other then that I’ve never had a problem. PCP automates practically everything so you don’t have to wait around for the host to setup your databases, POP accounts, or whatever. The only horror stories I’ve heard about CommuniTech was about an email they sent to CI Host clients and their quick response to accounts using high amounts of CPU for CGI. I’d highly suggest CommuniTech to anyone.

CI Host – I have three clients with these guys. For the size of the company they are sort of armature. However the packages are reasonable and they have quick and normally professional telephone support. Email support is a little slow, but I’ve always got an answer. They did have a MAJOR outage last January but I haven’t had a problem with them since. My largest complaint is the lack of automated account tools. They have a few mind you, but they are scattered about and for most things you still have to contact support.

Never ever choose Interland. I have been with them with my larger site now for 5 months, and am unhappy I did with every passing day, in fact I am moving now.

Never ever use them, they are a poor poor hosting company

yeah, their focus seems to be on marketing, yet they're a hosting company, hmm.

Yes my my my. They sure do seem to have a VERY good marketing dept. Pity.

The only one (marketing dept.) that comes close, are those @#$%*! .cc people. Every time I register a domain, I look forward to getting their offer of my domain.cc name for only $100/yr (maybe it was two years).

Since I can't remember, I suppose their marketing doesn't work all that well after all.
