Any thoughts on how long a domain name one can get away with. I know that there used to be a cap that now appears to have been removed/expanded but what I'm really asking is if there is a rule of thumb that is practical rather than policy.

Huh? I really have no clue what you're asking. A domain name what can get away with what?

I think Taff is talking about the length of the name

I think a domain name should be easy to remember, easy to spell or at least spellable lol. shorter is always easier to remember, look at msn.com imagine if they used the full name,

I saw a good artical somewhere about domain names, I'll try find it

yeah, like busy said Smiling

My client's three word company name makes for a 20 character domain plus extension. His 3 letter acronym is way long gone, like almost every 3 letter acronym out there.

Personally, I think 20 characters is too wordy for a domain name but I AM noticing a lot more of them out there, probably as alternatives evaporate. He's got his heart set on a .com which limits me even more.

how about a mirrored name? i am having the same problem, finding a decent small domain name, so thought of using a mirrored name, say if the company was called msn, you could use nsm and if you wanted to could use a mirror effect as a logo to produce the real name.

or m-s-n
or mmssnn (maybe not lol)

just a thought

if you client has more than one word like "this long name" instead of thislongname.com you could try tlname.com or thisln.com etc etc etc.

If you're wondering, 67 is actually the maximum length you can use in a domain name.

Yes 67 is the magic number, however, I don't know why anyone would want a domain so long.
