Help: Moving To New Host
My old host's support hasn't been seen in three weeks so I gotta move. I have a new host picked out but I am now looking for advice for making the transition easy and painless for both me and my clients.
My new host said they can't do a WHM to WHM transfer but that they can automatically transfer all the individual accounts cpanel to cpanel. Sound right to y'all?
One question I have is what I should tell my clients to expect during the transfer. With the host transfer I'll also need to update my registrar to the new host, right? So doesn't that mean there will be up to a three day period where they may still be looking at the old sites? My concern here is that they may have emails that get left on the old servers when the dns change finally kicks in. Is there anything I can do other than tell them to check their email constantly for several days?
What other problems or issues may arise that I should look out for?

DNS change is getting faster these days, longest I have had to wait is 48 hours, another was less than 6 (peeved me off cause I wasn't ready lol).
Database setups can be a problem as well as email forwarders (if any)
You should have an numeric url for your old site, you shuld be able to get able stray emails from that and forward or c & p into new one

If they place their domains instead of IP addresses in their POP3 mail settings they should not have problems with their mail. The Tech support of your new host could help you with moveing your web sites. Make sure they will change tjeir DNS properly.

Hi.
If you are on a shared server and do not have root access than this is a true statement. The cpanel to cpanel moves (without a root password) will need to be done one at a time.
What I do is to just let them know that you are moving to a new server, and that they should not experience any down time or problems. However, advise them also to do a backup of their site. Also advise them not to make any major changes to their sites until they hear back from you.
Advice here: If you have a support forum, start a thread on this subject and point your customers there for updates. Then keep them informed every step of the way.
What you should do is to move the sites first. Make SURE they all move. Once that's all done, then repoint your DNS to your new IP address at your registrar. Then, after a few days you can check to see if the sites moved. You can do this by typing this in the address bar:
http://www.DOMAINYOUARECHECKING.com/icons/i.php
In the resulting table, the first entry is the System entry. This will tell you what server you are on.
Then, once you are sure the domains are pointed to your new server, check a few sites to make sure everything transferred. Be sure to check:
Databases
Cron Jobs (I have found that sometimes these get lost in transfer)
Email boxes
Email forwarders
sub-domains
add-on domains
Once you are sure that all your bases are coverd, THEN cancel your other account. Important that you make this move only AFTER you verify everything. (It saved my bacon more than once).
