Getting hosted with a little questionable site? Help please.
Hi there.
I've got to explain something. I'm trying to get hosted on a shared server (a dedicated is too expensive for us because this is hobby).
Now a part of the site could be seen as "questionable".
Here's the story.
Now mainly I want to run a php/mysql or cgi board. This board will never abuse any US law or rule whatsoever and will not contain any warez, gamez, adult stuff or links to this information/files and such things.
We run a board which provides information about only European satellite systems (never about US satellite info!).
This information has to do with all the facts of the European satellite hobby.
There's information to be found about Satellite systems, receivers, receiversoftware, hardware, coding, decodering, encryption, dishes etc. So really everything about the European (mainly Dutch) satellite hobby.
Now, this is no problem, however, in the Netherlands, there is a small law which says it's not allowed to provide information about decoding with the goal not to pay (partly or full) to view programs.
Our goal is hobby, most of us have a subscription, but like I stated above, there is also a part about decoding and it could happen a Dutch company is not very happy with some of the information provided about decoding. That's the sole reason why we're looking for serverspace outside of Europe because outside of Europe this law does not count.
Maybe nothing will happen, but the host could get an e-mail of this company stating they're not happy with some of the information on our board (the decoding part) and stating this is abusing the dutch law (we don't want to infringe intellectual property rights because we know that is internationally forbidden).
In no way we will be hosting any illegal programs or software on the server itself and there will be no abusing of any other rules or laws whatsoever.
We would like to link to files on other servers, but only if the agrees that we can, if not, we will only provide the board and some software which is not illegal or copyrighted in any country on the world.
What do we need for our site?
1.) about 100-200 mb space
2.) php or php3/4 support
3.) 1 mysql database
4.) full cgi support
5.) Telnet access. This is not a demand, but would be nice to backup the mysql database ourselves. It's also alright if there is an another way we can backup or receive a backup of the database.
Pricing: We know there are multiple hostingplans where the above is possible for about $20-$25 per month.
Which host can help us when reading the above information or who can point us to a host which can accept us knowing that he/she could get an email.
I know Thoic.com would, but as I hear, their servers are full and as I know for paid hosting they're to expensive.
Notice! The problem is the questionable part, not the support we need like php and cgi etc, because this is almost possible on any host.
Sorry for the long post, but i really need help with this and things should be clear, we don't want our account cancelled without notice because the host did not know the above.
Regards, Johan

Thanx for your reply. I'll sure have a look!
And they don't have a problem with the questionable part, you think?
Greetings, Johan.

No, they have been given great praise from webmaster forums like these all over the web. If you do a search here, you'll likely find many threads about HostRocket.

My suggestion is to email a host you like stating your situation, and if they would be willing to host your site. It's a much better idea hosting with a company that allows this, then one who will find out and cancel your account. Most hosting companies only care about U.S. law, so in most cases you'll be fine.
