Hi Everyone!

I'm curious to know what you think the web hosting industry will be like in 2 - 5 years from now. Do you think it will just get so full that there will be tons of hosting companies to choose from every where you go and that everyone will be so afraid to pick somebody.

Do you think that as time goes on, that it will get smaller because the bigger guys will take over or the BETTER companies that really care about the customers will be the ones still standing?

I'm starting a thread to see what you think about this issue. Spill your guts, I'm curious. Wink

Interesting discussion, but looking at virtually every other industry I know of it seems that the big guys (some of the small today may become some of the big guys tomorrow) take over a large market share. However, I believe the internet is different from the norm right now. Until we reach a point were virtually everyone is familiar with the internet like they are with TV and radio. The internet will remain a place for scam hosting companies to get the newbies. At this point, I personally like to stay with very large well known companies or local companies. The reasons are simple, the large companies have a reputation to uphold and the local companies are within easy law suit range. So, if the large company screws with me I go for their reputation and if the local company screws with me I'll see them in court.

Hmmmm....

I think (and hope) that lots of the "fly by night" hosts will be gone within 2-5 years. (The kind you read complaints about on hosting boards all over the web. The kind that promise service, take your money, and then don't provide any service.) They give the hosting industry a bad name, and make the process of finding a web host very painful.

There was a HUGE thread over at Host Investigator a while ago regarding a "BWHB", or Better Web Hosting Bureau. I think it would be great to see a set of regulations that web hosts have to follow, as was discussed in the afforementioned thread. Nothing hard to follow, just things like:

- must provide promised service
- must live up to promised money-back guarentees
- no use of the word "unlimited" when refering to space/bandwidth
- etc, etc...

Just my $0.02. Wink
