If you have a large user database, it's definately worth going for a paid one, there are a couple of leaders in this area, all searchable on HotScripts as somebody mentioned.

paid service like liveperson is quit costly. and its monthly fees. i havent see the need to use it. there is open source that provide live chat as well.
May be you should try help desk support. Then it is no necessary to sit the whole day in front of computer.

Shine Live Help is pretty good too. It is a fork of crafty and it adds sugarcrm integration. Worth taking a look at.
