DigitalNation - dn.com feedback please! - Please give us some feedbasks on dn.com host (Posted by vb
Could someone please give me some feedback of what you think about dn.com (digitalnation-dedicated server)? I am thinking about moving to one of their unix dedicated server plans. Their "hardware" and bandwidth allowed seem to be really good. But it'd cost users a fortune if we have some problems with the servers. Their plans do not come with any technical service at all. It is like once you buy a dedicated server, you're on your own. If you need any help, you will have to pay (around 200/hr). I do understand this is how it works when it comes to "dedicated server" customers, but I would hope DN could help (with no extra charges) with some minor questions.
These are what I assume by just gathering information from their web. If any of you used to be with or is currently with DN, could you clarify me or give me some feedback please ?
Thank you very much!

Evening. You are right on the "money" when it comes to dedicated server support. It is very expensive.
I am unsure if DN allows you to ask minor support questions without charging you. Unless they have to do actual work on your server, then I don't think they will.
However, my host, Communitech.Net, allows their dedicated server clients to call in and ask simple questions, etc. Their prices are VERY competitive and affordable. In fact, you can get an Intel Celeron 400 mhz, 64 megs of ram, SCSI 4.3 gig HD, and 50 gigs of bandwidth all for $259.99/month with no setup fee.
Check them out. You may like them. Cheers!

Thanks for your reply.
DN seems to be excellent for their hardware, connection, and location. But it seems like "you're on your own" kind of like, after you've bought a server??
Thanks, I will check communitech out but I have heard some negative feedbacks? Could you share the good and the bad?

Yes, you do feel like "you're on your own" sometimes. You asked me to share my experience with Communitech.Net and so far it has been no less than superb!
We had a little misunderstanding in the beginning about my server being up but we got that taken care of. Their support is very polite and to the point. Just the other day, I called them about DNS servers. They told me step-by-step what I needed to do to configure them.
The negative feedbacks you were referring to where mainly pointed at their virtual web hosting support. I cannot confirm nor deny any comments, etc. derived from their virtual hosting.
My support has been handleb solely by their dedicated server staff.
Hope that answers your question. Cheers!

Chase,
Hmm.. I checked out their site and it seems like they have some good packages at reasonable prices. I might end up there! you mentioned DNS setup and that triggerred my question that I meant to ask but forgot.
1. Is your server also configured to be a DNS server or are you using their(communitech.net)'s DNS servers?
2. Did they give you a list of IPs in the beginning or did you have to request one at a time?
3. When you mentioned you called them about DNS setup, were you configuring a new IP to point to a new domain? If so, was it complicated to configure a new IP to a new domain?
4. Did you have to purchase their "managed services" for asking those DNS setup questions?
Thanks!

1. Yes, my questions were related to setting up my server for DNS.
2. Yes, they gave me a list of IPs I was able to use in the beginning.
3. No, I was not asking how to configure an IP to point to a domain. My questions were about setting up the nameservers. You will need to know bind in order to do this.
4. No, I did not have to buy their "manage services" contract. They did not do any actual work on the server. Therefore, I didn't have to buy it.
Cheers!

Concerning Digital Nation:
I signed up with them a couple weeks ago. Using the Cobalt RaQ2, I could not ask for a better server for web hosting. My support consited of reading through cobalt's support pages, manual, and a handy unix book. I found I needed to edit a couple config files to get the ftp configured properly. But in all the server doesnt require much support as long as your careful what you do from telnet.
