Hi,

we've been looking for a good colocation offer for a long time.
And now dialtoneinternet has this "Buy and Colo Raq3"-offer.
It really looks good to me.

Has anyone used them before ?
How is the support ?
Speed ?
etc ...

One thing, I just got a very bad experanice with RAQ server. Do not get a RAQ server. IMHO they are junk. Some CGI script like UBB and link won't work well with it because of the "CGI wrapper". It does not take 1 hour to set up RAQ. It took me like one week to just figure out how to fix all those damn problems the RAQ has.

Hi,

I think the cgiwrapper is a very good thing.
The only trouble I had is to convince my providers to use it

Do you have a list of problems you had with the RAQ ?
I'm using it for some (small) sites and it works well so far.

But there is no problem with dialtone themselves ?!

I'm using Dialtoneinternet. I have only good things to say about them.
Speed is good, uptime as well. The first 30 days you get free support, but then your pretty much on your own.

Just as a general comment, from personal experience, RAQ servers are good at serving up HTML pages quickly, but when it comes to CGI applications, it's like trying to drag a 2 ton turtle across the beach. Unix/ Sun servers are much better equipped at running CGI scripts such as UBB etc.

To give you an idea, I run a site that consumes close to 80 gigs of transfers a month, and it's hosted on a RAQ server. The site consists only of HTML pages, and the speed is actually extremely fast. Add any CGI script, however, and it immediately starts complaining of server overload. My advise is, if you want to run CGI scripts on your site, go with Linux or Sun.

Don't forget FreeBSD. The best OS for the web! Cgiwrapper is very bad. It put a lot of usless process on the CPU, ie cgiwrapper errors. Cgiwrapper is very hard to disable. It is hardcode in Cobalt RAQ Lunix OS.

Cobalt RAQ does have a lot of config problems. A lot admin like me spent more time trying to fixs RAQ problems then working on the website. Also Cobalt has very limited support. Most of the support will come from other Cobalt user through the mailing list.

Thanks folks.

Seems that I have to keep looking
Since we really want a server for non-http stuff.
Mostly DBs and mail, but news, etc too.

Is there any good priced offer out there ?
We need "loads of space" (>2GB)
and much bandwitdh (dedicated >64K)
at chea rates.

Yes I know, anybody wants that,
but we need it

Otherwise I'll really have to go for a
leased line to my home,
which is still pretty expensive in germany.

thanks anyway
