Dedicated Servers? - Affordable, powerful, any ideas?
Hello, I am and have been looking for a dedicated server or splitting a dedicated server with someone else. So far, e-access.com seems to be my pick but I know they are lacking in some areas and I'm looking for other deals.
My requirements mainly are speed, 3 - 6 gig hard drive, 250 or higher processor, atleast 64 mb ram (prefer 128), Linux (redhat), full dns control, atleast 20 IP addresses and pleanty of transfer. I know a good deal about servers so support isn't too big of a concern but bandwidth and power (I run a lot of powerful cgis) are.
Please let me know who you recommend, use or even dislike so I have a better sense of where to go. Any help is appricated a ton. Thanks!

You may want to look into buying a server of your own and collocating? Although it will be expensive at first, I think it is much better. Think of it as leasing a car compared to buying one, after four years of leasing what have you left from all the money you paid for the car? nothing while with the car you bought, you own it.

Dass, I think that's what he was talking about . I think some hosts have a lease to own program too.
Anyway, Ted, a few good dedicated server companies I know of are:
1.) colossus.net
Their web pages could use a lot of improvement, but they have some good deals.
<plug>
2.) virtualis.com/vr/bfarkas/
As I found out, it turns out that Virtualis really does have competitive pricing for dedicated servers.</plug>
3.) rackspace.com
This company looks good too.

You may want to look into www.2o.net or www.dedicatedservers.com for service. Both are very nice looking and give you ample features. Hope that can help you.

Hello Ted
We'd certainly recommend http://www.rackspace.com
We have a dedicated server with them and their help and support has been nothing less than excellent. One thing I especially like about them, is that you get assigned an account manager who is technically adept. This gives you a focus for any problems, issues, requirements etc.
They've proven to be very honest and thorough with their explanation of any problems we've experienced, which to us is worth every penny we spend with them.
They're nice
Regards,
Jonathan Michaelson

Bryan, I do not think he was talking about buying a server and collocating "...a dedicated server or splitting a dedicated server with someone else." Which is why I recommended collocating.

I use Dialtone Internet at http://www.dialtoneinternet.net and so far I have been very happy with them. Their prices are the lowest I have seen and the service is very good.

BTW at www.dedicatedservers.com their prices include 50 GIGS of bandwidth a month. Now for $250.00 or so a month, that's a good deal. You can buy more bandwidth at 50 gig increments for $150.00.

Yevlesh,
Dialtone seems good, but the minimum contract is 1 yr!
Are they mad? What happens if I don't like their service? Will I have to start chasing my $1500+ refund.
I was considering them, but their 1 year contract totally put me off.
Yevlesh were you aware of their contract length and how long have you been with them?
Lastly what do you people think of Servers4u.com?

I'm looking for someone to hookup with to help pay for a dedicated server. What I am buying is a Cobalt Raq2 server. Are you interested? If you are, contact me at [email protected] or contact me on ICQ at 7544722.

I was with Dialtone Internet for a little over a month, and I was aware of the yearly contract when I signed up.
When I asked them about it, they told me that it is just a formallity and nothing to worry about.
They assured me that my card will be charged monthly and so far they kept their promise.
Thanks,
Yevgeniy
