Decent VPS?
Hello!
How do you check your potential hosters?
I keep in mind HostV.com for VPS, but I do not know how to start checking them, what to ask and what need to be with package, how their prices are etc..
Could you please give some suggestions?
EDIT:
And if dedicated server and VPS have the same price (from different companies for sure) which one would you go?
Tnx

Complete list of questions and ask them. Compare with answers you have got from others web hosting providers.

Is control panel important for you? What RAM are you looking for to run your site?

Surely I have always checked the company I am going to sign up with. You may ping the company to check their speed or ask them to give you upload\download file. Send them email and contact their live chat. I behaved like that with ServerPoint.com.

While thinking of choosing a VPS package, two things come to my mind, and these are : the amount of RAM you need and the control panel which you would love to have, but then also management whether you need this or needn't from your host.
Now I do favor Directadmin, as it's very economical in terms of resources taken and allows you to feel comfortable enough by providing
1)DNS & MX Record Management
2)Login History
3)Squirrelmail Alternative
4)Custom Error Pages & .htaccess Redirects for novice users
Apart from that Cpanel is also a good, but more resource-intesnive choice.Anyway, among todays VPS providers, VPSlinks.com and Serverpoint.com do stand out, thу host I'm using A2hosting.com also offer unmanaged VPS packages, they have recently added Lxadmin packages, might be a good shot.

What's Lxadmin about? Is it used on a2hosting.com shared plans?

Hello!
I think that is nothing shameful use VPS server. HostV.com provide VPS and dedicated servers only and I guess that is good point. I think that it is good point for you because you are going to sign up with VPs company and that is not bad at all.

David, I think that "checking" is almost done by means of obtaining reviews and looking into the plans' details, then investigating what is actually meant by management, that's it. Serverpoint.com offer a number of services and then charges $99 for 60 minutes of support if it's something not included.

A VPS and dedi are nearly the same things. HostV.com offers both but they offer double RAM on their VPSs. In this case I see that it's better to use VPS, no need to use a dedi. Or maybe you mean the other company, don't you?

And I think that if there to identifical offers with dedicated server and VPS I would go for dedicated server. But that might be problems with upgrade.

What problems can be? I don't think so. I think you may upgrade the package plan with no issues at all. You may contact HostV.com support and find out evrything you need from them directly.

I think the major of the companies allow to upgrade the package plans to their clients. It's not an issue at all.

Ansв if I were you I'd try to cover more companies. There are plenty of decent VPS providers: solidhost.com, santrex.net or vpslink.com

Solidhost.com is EU located and more known as windows VPS provider. I have hear a lot of them. They are really good. But they offer linux solutions as well. And I personally do not know about their linux. I think that getting in touch with your provider is needed.

Vicerus, Yes you are right. And they are quite expensive. Because they offer lots of fetures with their packages and located in EU. But for example: http://www.justgotvps.com/ - has the same features and low features and not worse then others. I think "Where there's a will, there's a way"

Ruth, I guess HostV.com increase RAM by adding slots, and I guess for life merans for your stay with them, but check their TOS to be on the safe side.

hi, Solommon, for the company like JustGotVPS.com you need to make sure tht the company really provide that (their VPS prices are very cheap for me). I mean that yo need to make sure and then sign up. Maybe it worth to read some reviews etc. BTW do JustGotVPS call their packages VPS? Or?

JustGotVPS.com call their VPS plans, for example Starter Root, Junior Root, etc.
This company provides VPSs that even the beginner with a tight budget can afford.

The friend of mine tested Serverpoint.com's VPS dials. And finaly signed up for them. So I would suggest you to add them as well. And I have to say that my friend is extra captious...
