Corporations getting into hosting services.
I have noticed that big computer corporations are starting to get into the hosting industry. http://www.dellhost.com , http://servers.yahoo.com/ , and I am sure more will come.
I wonder how this will effect the large number of smaller hosts ? People who are not informed about web hosting will surly pick Yahoo or Dell over a smaller hosting company, because they know that those huge corporations can be trusted.
And insights?

Although I agree that all these corporations are getting into hosting, I also think that it shows that these smaller hosts can compete just as well. I don't think they'll ever dominate the hosting area, 'cause mainly they're known for computers, etc... Not web hosting...

Yahoo went into hosting because they bought out simplenet ( www.simplenet.com ) probably for their infrastructure and server farms. They had to complete the contracts, so just decided to continue offering hosting services.
BTW, I think their prices are waaay to high.

i think some smaller host will do well because they have less overhead. however, i think some mid sized host could get knocked out of the market as the competition continues to heat up.

I think the "big ones" will get all the newbies.
And since they're only trouble we really don't want them. Do we ?
I mean, I prefer a pro, who knows excatly what he wants. And knows when he made a mistake, instead of calling every five minutes ...
Semi-Pros will always go for the small hosts.

I think Yahoo's/SimpleNET's prices are very fair...

For example, I looked at dialtone internet, for the same price ($600) you can get:
Intel Pentium III
700 Mhz Dual
512 MB ECC
2 x 9.1 SCSI
SW/RAID1
RedHat 6.1
50 GB transfer
"unlimited" IPs
vs for Yahoo
550 MHz processor - dual capable (read: single)
128 MB RAM
9.1 GB SCSI drives (2)
8 IP Addresses
20 POP Email Accounts (!!!)
128 Kbs / 40 GB Transfer per month.
One FREE Domain Name Registration*
I don't know... it just seems like too little for too much. ...And simplenet wasn't even that good in the first place.
