Co-location - Who has the best prices? (Posted by Justin Stayton)
Who has the best co-location prices? I am wanting to build a server(s) but don't have enough for a T1 or OC3 line. I just want to use their lines.

I would look for a local company... If you co-locate with some other company you will have to mail the the whole computer system! I would check out local ISPs, first off and see if any will give you decent rates. Most ISPs I talk to asked 150 bucks for co-location. I however, managed to get a deal, always barter! Tell them X ISP said they would do it for 75 a month. They will bring their price down more often than not.
Also, if you are going to host pages, you are going to spend a lot of money building a machine, backup is a MUST, if your hard drive crashes and you lose all your costumers data, you might see a court date. Also, before I would worry about getting a T3 3 Connection I would worry about getting SCSI hard drives, that 80 Mgz speed really outperforms the 33 Mgz speed of an IDE drive. To max out a T3 connection you are going to need a Pentium Xeon Processor maybe a 600 or dual 600s?
Also, make sure you have excellent knowledge about NT or Unix O/S to keep security tight.
Around where I come from a T1 line to your house is around 800 a month, 400 phone bill, 400 internet cost. I am not sure how accurate that is, I heard about it a while ago. I've seen hosting packages for around 25/month that give you 4 gig bandwith, 200 megs of space, asp/perl, ssi, and Real Audio. It would be really hard to make hosting a primary source of income, and you would have to push it really hard with advertising.

I was thinking about asking my local ISP (who I use). I know most of the people who work their, so maybe I'll be able to get a good deal. Thanks for the help... We were thinking of Dual Pentium III 500MMx, 57.6 GB HD, 256MB Ram...
