The best dedicated server is one that meets your needs. Off the shelf dedicated servers are a waste of money, you should order a server that meets your requirements and your budget, not just standard package. The important thing is finding a reliable host with a good data centre and emergency fail-safes (power, connectivity etc).

4x Opterons 846HE 2.0GHz 1MB L2 55.0W
RAM 8GB PC3200 ECC Reg. 8x1GB
HDD 2x 146GB SCSI U320 SCA 8MB 10K
That's what I consider to be a decent dedicated offer, plus Raid 1. I wouldn't go for less.

I agree, the latest configuration is a must.

I'm using Server Beach's servers right now and they're pretty good. There were a few downtimes and it was frustrating for them to get it my server online, but everything is fine so far.
The best dedicated server according to me is from eukhost; I have read their reviews as well as my friend has opted for their service which is all positive till date and I think they are quite reliable and cost effective.
The best dedicated server I have used was from ahosting.biz. Their prices are nice and their support works good. I have never had any serious issues with them.

You must be a special case, I've had dealings with oneandone and they don't hold a candle to Hostinguk!
