When others link to your server

Hi all - help!? I got this message from my web site host:
Problem domains for client with login 'justjeni'

Domain name: fitnessandfreebies.com
Disk usage: 377317121
Disk space limit: 314572800
Traffic: 1688684432
Traffic limit: 31457280000

Does anyone know what this all means? I'm totally "DOH!" on this one, although I have just recently added some graphics for others to freely take and started my affiliate program as well. I think some are linking to graphics on my server and all I can come up with from this message is perhaps I'm exceeding bandwidth, but they don't really state that so I'm confused and not at all sure. But if that is the case, how could I find out? Is there a way?

I've a long way to go in understanding stats like this, so please forgive my ignorance! Roll eyes I'm trying.

Lines 1 and 2: You have too much stuff on the server -- you have 377M, you should have only 300M (or so).

Lines 3 and 4: Your traffic is under your limit, do not worry about bandwidth issues.

Basically, you have a lot of stuff on the server. If you don't have a lot of files, then check for mail that's not been taken off the server and raw log files that haven't been processed and deleted. They will really suck up space quickly.

Whew..I didn't think it was bandwidth but just couldn't tell what the heck they meant here. Thanks so much - when you mentioned e-mail, I remembered I haven't cleaned out my web mail for some time (get it in my Outlook and keep forgetting about that web mail!) so I'll go do that, maybe that will help. Hope so and again, thanks so much.

Since this is the graphics forum, and I was thinking on those lines, how would a person find out if someone is linking to their server or not? I've heard of people doing this, but never had reason to do it before!

417 E-mails sitting in my web mail! Think that did it? I do have a lot of files on my site, but most are small, text files. I deleted all those e-mails and now my site is down.

Tip to all: Don't ever use Globat for a host, they're always going down! Mad

Email can really add up -- 400+ messages of spam.

Even if you get your mail through Outlook, you can delete it from the server (it's in the options to remove messages from the server).

Search for .htaccess and bandwidth in these forums, I believe there are a number of threads on the topic of blocking hot-linking and also on how to tell (basically you look at your site stats and see if anything is jumping out above normal usage).

using your .htaccess file to stop hot linking is the best way to do it, BUT if you have an affiliate program that only offers the code (images load from your server for tracking purposes) then you'll have to be very careful how you set it up (.htaccess) or you'll end up blocking your affiliates.
best way would be to add a folder with the banners etc in the far end of your folder tree and place a blank .htaccess file it in with allow all/deny none so people can still link to the banners and stuff, don't have any folders off this one or it's images will be up for grabs too.

Thanks, Busy - I did read the thread about hotlinking and protecting grahpics with the .htaccess file. I also bookmarked a link someone had offered that helps you do this - it's a little confusing to me right now, but I'll sit down and see if I can't figure it out. I never planned for anything like this so with the affiliate program and allowing link exchanges to link to my banners etc., it just makes it a bit more challenging, I guess! Wink
