What would be a good logo?
I am updating my software and so I want to update the logo, or possibly replace it.
The software is SonicMailer Pro - a mailing list manager
The current logo is:
So what do you think of when you think of "SonicMailer Pro" in the context of a mailing list/newsletter system?
Thanks!

Well... Sonic could be seen as 'really fast' or hearing-related. Mail is obvious. So I think you have the right idea with your current logo, you just need to rework it. Maybe go 3D?
You can always download some free (GNU or OpenSource) icons, and mix them together. Just make sure you follow the terms of their use, or you can be in big trouble if anyone notices or finds out.
Check out iconfinder.net (I think they're down for the moment... huge amounts of traffic apparently, but they have really good quality stuff. And a HUGE library... I'm trying to mirror it for them)

Or hire a logo designer like myself...
Why not instead of fire, use a swoosh, which signifies the word sonic much better...

A swoosh can get you into major trouble. Nike will own you in a lawsuit.

I actually like the old logo. But when I think of sonic, I immediately think of Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog. Maybe you could somehow roll the letter in a sphere and have the flames coming out from the back like you do now.
PS the link in your sig doesn't work

I have learned that is not such a great thing to change the logo , because the logo is the visual of your business , if the logo changes , people may think that your business if diferent.
I think that the same rule could apply for our personal sites , a logo should be our image on the internet.

I asked my friend to do me some mockups... so far I've gotten one. What you guys think of this?

I like this one better than the first logo you posted. But there are other options though. Maybe you could ask your friend to incorporate the words "SONICMAIL PRO" in the logo itself, kind of like the texts are moving fast to depict the services of the product. Or try out the a replica of the comic cartoon character "roadrunner" which I think is perfect, specially if you put the mail on its beak
It just a suggestion though.
Cheers!

I like it. The reflection could stand out a tad bit more though. It looks cleaner and more professional.

I like the logo. It get's it point across and is easy to remember. I think it could use a bit of tweaking. Instead of a redesign of the logo maybe a redraw. Stay in tune with what you already have so that people who are familiar with it are not confused by a new concept. But have it cleaned up, drawn in a vector format so that it is easily scalable with a stronger color scheme and crisper lines.

To be honest, that logo is crap.
In an era of reflections, "fake" 3D, creative mis-spellings, and other such "clever" logo design techniques... yours just SCREAMS "I'm old and out-dated"
If I went to some random site found on a search engine, when searching for an appropriate topic... and found your "logo"... chances are that I would have immediately left. A large part of open-source software installation/usage is the availability of screenshots, and whether or not it looks like it's still being modified/updated. Again, by your logo, I would have assumed that it wasn't being updated/supported anymore.
I would suggest ditching the flying motif, as well as the "2D" approach. Use something other than a stereotypical envelope, do something creative, and add some shadow/reflection ... and you could have a sweet logo.
In the end, it all depends on who you listen to...

First ,a good logo must be good to look at. It must be impacting. if a logo is not appealing to the eye,
it will defeat its purpose - attracting attention and providing effective identification.
Second.the logo must can incude the theme (main content) of website. It should let user know what the website will provide in first eyes.
I highly recommend reliable web hosting
