What type of website to create?
(Couldn't find the "right" forum... so please move to a better one if need be)
I've always done a website for services (programming, web design, etc) and have never made another "type" of site.
I want to be able to work on it, but not put TOO much time into it, and make money out of it. I thought of a script directory website, but this simply takes too much time to create AND maintain!
I recently thought about a lyrics website, but of course there are legal issues there, but then again, of the hundreds out there... I am sure it is fine? Never heard of any legal battles involving lyrics posted....
I know you can make money with any type of website if your work hard enough... but maybe people could offer some suggestions for a website that could make money without TOO much work.
Also, especially with something like a lyrics site, I could easily find people to help out (like friends), but with other things it would require more technical knowledge...
Thanks!

Well I don't see anything wrong with the lyrics website idea. Besides why would it be illegal? Besides, they supply the lyrics with the CD even if they didn't, if you sing a song enough, you'd know the lyrics anyway.

Lyrics sites have been found to be illegal and have been shut down for copyright violations.

What?! Thats insane! Oh well... what about http://www.lyrics.co.nz/ then?
Anyway, what about a tutorial site? You don't nessarily have to write them your self, just look for good articles then link them.

There used to be bigger sites. Most of them that have lyrics sites up only have lyrics for authors that have given permission. You'll find they shut down regularly.

and the big ones like lyrics.com just link to sites that host the lyrics (like peoples homepages, fansites or the official band site).

Yah I actually briefly thought about this, and with the idea of creating 0 tutorials in-house... they would all be linked to other sites. I guess this is still a possibility, but who knows... it seems that there are already soo many sites with tutorials.

Yes, there are so many and who would know where to go to find the one that they need? If you index them then they will know exactly where to go (first).

I've thought of creating a website for girls ages (12-18) that would cover just about everything... beauty, fashion, personal hygene, boys, etc.... I'm male, but I know I could get plenty of females to assist me on the website. I think it could be very successful.... some sites that would be very similar:
http://www.girlfriend.com.au/
http://www.girland.com/
http://www.go-girl.com/
http://www.smartgirl.org/
It would pretty much be an online "seventeen" or "cosmogirl", just not exactly "magazine format". Also, after the one for girls is finished and running well, one for guys and then one for kids would be created...
any input on this?

Sounds good to me, also, I think it'll be a good learning curve (being a guy and all...)

I think it'd b too hard even w/ girls helping you out for a guy to make a site tageted at a female audience. Think about, you know not only nothing about the subject (how teen girls feel about hygene make-up etc.) but also how they want a site to look. You'd be taking a stab in the dark. Frankly I'd make a site about reviews mabe you could review movies or tv shows or video games stuff like that. I think that topic is more in your field.

How exactly do you plan on 'making money' from your site? will people have to subscribe to your site?...or do you plan on selling things?..or how?
Regarding the 'lyrics' site idea...how could profiting off of someone else's artistic work without their permission NOT be copyright infringement?
Let's say YOU, KandieMan are an indie artist...your lyrics are printed in your cd jacket for those who buy it to see, your lyrics are even posted for free on your own personal artist website (which many artists do as I'm sure you know)...then one day you are surfing the web and come across a site where YOUR lyrics are posted without your permission...what is your reaction? Do you feel your copyright has been violated? For me, if noone was PROFITING off of it, I would have no problem with it. I can see it as free advertising, especially since I post the same thing for free on my own site...but if someone was PROFITING off of that website, (off of my work without me even knowing about it)...that's infringement any way you look at it! Big sites like the example you guys used like lyrics... I am sure they get permission (as Suzanne mentioned) from the artists or from the PRO's the artists' belong to, and I am sure a royalyty is paid if any PROFITS are made by the site...the lyrics are posted there for free, so that is not the money making aspect of that site...they SELL the artists' cd's on there as well, and obviously royalties must be paid for that.
That's my two cents.

I just want to point out that this thread was started over a year ago. Tomaine2002 revived it somehow, I don't know how.

I'm wondering how you came across it? Was it the similar threads listing at the bottom of the page or from a search? This sort of thread doesn't pop up to the top in other situations.

True ...... but thats not generally something you check every time you read a thread ...... i was thinking that maybe u could make it blink on and off if its real old so ppl see the date ...... but since you dont have that i guess i'll just have to get into the habbit of checking the dates before i post
