Usabiliy: Pop ups? Frames? or straight Links?
Anyone here have any input? or work arounds?
I'm going to be redoing an image gallery for a relatives site. They paint bicycles and have hundreds of photos of really beautiful bikes.
My first choice for the Navigation would be thumbnails with popup windows. Great because it would make it easy to compare images etc in multiple windows.
Unfortunately, a lot of people use popup blockers so this option would have to be accompanied by a message exhorting users to temporarily disable popup blockers and I think a lot won't bother. The images are a big key to building desire for my relatives site so it's important we get it right.
The other choices:
Frames - probably my next choice. Not as good especially because their will be many, many thumbs.
Last choice, straight linked pages.

I'm sure if you use javascript to control the pop-ups the pop-up blockers wont block them as it is a user agreed action.

My client tells me that the pop up blocker on his system will block all pop ups. I don't know how true this is for most PC people.
I'm a mac/safari guy so I really don't worry about them too much. I don't do much surfing on my PC.

Julia is right -- popup blockers do not activate when the user clicks on a popup window on purpose. They only block automatic popup windows.
So, you can use that fine. However, what I would recommend is a popup viewer that allows users to click between each image like on many news sites.
