Transparent images in Fireworks

Does anyone know anything about creating transparent images in fireworks? I was trying to do this last night but it kept wanting to make my white transparent. I don't want white transparent. I just did it like in photoshop where you take away the background and let the checkered back show through. Fireworks didn't like that. Is there a trick to this? I can look it up in the help later on tonight but it would help a lot of someone happens to know offhand.

On your optimise panel you control what the export properties are - you can have the chequered background on the actual image but it probably is set to 'no transparency' on the panel and therefore you need to change that to index or alpha transparency.
