Splatter with Illustrator - need transparency

Hi All,

I'm using Illustrator 9 to created a splattered edge of a rectangle. However the 'splatter' portion is simply coming in white - I want it to be transparent. Anyone know how to fix this? I've googled until blue in the face and haven't found anything.

PS I've tried the same with Photoshop CS's filter and the same thing happens.
