Unisys, the people who came out with the GIF format images (well actually it's some language) are now charging a $5000 license too use the GIF image format. So thats means until someone makes a new kind of image standard, no animations and no way to compress images. Press release at: http://corp2.unisys.com/LeadStory/lzw-license.html

So they're going to visit every web site all over the world, check for GIF files and request a license from the owner?

Considering that the majority of sitesd are owned and operated by small busines people and individuals that will do more harm to the web than good.

I Don't think most webmasters have to worry this is what is stated on thier release:

"Many Web site operators use commercially available software which creates GIF images offline which are then posted on their Web sites. Since most of this commercially available software is under license from Unisys for their use of the LZW patent, users of this software are probably covered as well for this use of GIF images on their Web sites."

As Far as i can teel how else could you create the gifs without commercial software. Smiling

Correct me if I am wrong (as I have beeing saying on all of today's posts I am tired Smiling ) but it seems to imply that most software has you covered for this fee as they have a licence for the .gif format.

So this just means that commercial software writers need to pay the money but if I already have a program that is still ok and all of my GIFS on my site (every image is one b/c for me they are smaller than JPG) are still free.
