My friend has recently bought a business and has inherited a web site with it rusheenlodge.com . There are various problems with the site e.g it is slow to load and the email link doesn't work. She would like to be able to update the site herself however she is finding it difficult to track down the original web designer who is in possession of the files. She likes the existing site but would like to have a 'skip intro' button and give people the option of viewing the site in a html version as well as shockwave.
My question is if she can track down the designer is it a lot of work for the designer to provide the site with a htlm version (or whatever it is called! - one without the movement!)Also what will she need to do to be able to update the site herself? Would she be better off scrapping the site (something she doesn't really want to do)?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

hmm, kind of a tough question...
If she's able to track down the designer, and if he still has the original files, it seems to me that it shouldn't be too much work as the site does not have many pages.
Maybe ask him to redesign the flash version also, because the texts dissapear really fast, I couldn't really read them all.
Anyway, to update the site herself, she must know the very basics of Html, which can be learned online btw.
In answer to your question 'Would she be better off scrapping the site?' I'd say that if she likes the current, why loose it?

The first job is to track down the designer (I couldn't see any reference to them within the site) then it'll depend really on whether they have the original fla file as to whether they can amend the flash site and then whatever they would charge to do an html static version.
So one question she should be asking herself is how much is she willing to pay and if this designer is too expensive does she want to get someone else to do a static version? If she has ftp details for access to the site then the problem with skipping the flash can be overcome by creating a new index page which gives visitors the chance to choose which version they view.
As for her updating the site herself, I wouldn't say that she would be able to update the flash part easily without fully learning flash and purchasing it, although the html she could quite easily learn the basics as Jack said online and all you really need is notepad for that.

The site needs more than a skip intro button. In fact, there is no intro on this site
, just a preloader without percentage loading feedback. The file size is way overblown, to begin to address that would mean a complete overhaul of the .fla structure. You may want to consider a new designer if you are going in that direction.

Thankyou very much for all your very helpful replys. My own feeling is that as she wants to update the site fairly regularly, all be it in a minor way, she needs a site in html and therefore any site in shockwave will not allow her to update herself unless she learns shockwave (I don't think she will)I have dreamweaver and would be willing to (try!)to provide her with a similar site in html if she cannot track down the original designer - if I then hand her over the files and show her how to use ftp is it just a case of her composing her updates (which will be small e.g special offer info) in notepad and then cutting and pasting them into the files provided? Sorry for what is probably a basic question but i'm not quite sure how I can enable her to update her site files. Thanks again for your help.

The thing that's needed is for you to design the html site & upload it, then she'll need to download the site using an ftp program, make her changes in notepad then upload them using ftp to overwrite those on the server. If you then make any changes to the site she'll need to download them again to overwrite her local copies.
