Which one looks best? Right nav or left nav?

I like the right - balances well against the left aligned logo. Might be a tough sell to the client though.

I think I perfer the left but maybe make the nav section a little smaller (not as wide)

I like them both, but would prefer the right-handed navigation if you made the margin on the left a little wider so there is more space on that side and it doesn't feel so squooshed up against the left edge.

Right looks right, leave the left for right. I think Suzanne is right too - if you'd left more space on the left, the right would look more right. Alright? Right. Wink

It's moved the the right a little and does look much better. How's that?

Abhi, I do believe you are trying to cornfuse me. Wink

I'm going to disagree and say left! Left here is the more logical choice for me because you eye is drawn left for the logo and it seems uncomfotable having to then look right for the navigation.

I agree with Julia. I think left would be better but with less width.

I think the overwhelming issue for me isn't left v. right (though the right is much improved). When I look at them now, the logo is wrongly placed. There is nothing to the right of it and that space draws my attention more than the text (or the navigation).

Now really, you don't want the navigation to stand out, you want the text (content) to stand out, and then the navigation be recognizable (since the content is more important than the navigation, not that the navigation isn't important).

But at the moment, the blank lines are the strongest. Basically the header is overpowering the rest of the page.

Suggestions:

1. Centre the logo if you're not going to have anything else up there.
2. Reduce the size of the logo if possible (may be difficult with that wee little Thoreau quote in there).
3. If you can't make the header smaller (lighter), make the rest of the page heavier/darker and add weight (darker colour) to the bottom of the page to balance it better.

I have added some text in the blank space of the header logo. I think it looks much better.

Thanks for the ideas and inspiration. The owner loves it so I am going to let it be. Another client convinced that living "right" is the way to go. Wink

Yes, that looks good. I was thinking along the lines of what Suzanne was saying. The original left side navigation was much too left side heavy. The right navigation provided some balance.

Could someone with Netscape 4 look at this site for me and make sure that things aren't overlapping? You should see just an unstyled page (i hope)

Thanks!

no overlap in NS4.7, side naviation is below content. bottom content (botom nav, copyright ...) is left aligned with no background color - is presentable Smiling

Everything should be left aligned. is it?

short answer: Yep

longer answer: Yes mam, all left aligned and looking good

long silly answer: well since mars is in line with venus the angle of the dangle is just fine when we tilt our heads 5 degrees to the east and hold our toungues to the west. The extreme math to work out this event is simply done by 1 + 1 = window / day of the week * the season (winter) and looking at the page Wink

Page looks good, but your photo sizes are huge. 70k for a 400x300 jpg? Drop the quality down until it's around 20-25k, 30k max. If you're using Photoshop, goto File > Save for Web.

Man, I really need to upgrade my copy of Photoshop! How much control do you have over this built-in image compression process?

It's pretty nice. It'll let you choose from various presets (color sets, quality, image format, size) and gives you a preview of what it'll look like and what size it'll be. I think you can also set your own values, too. I know v7 has it, not sure if older ones do or not.

Not v5 which I still have. I use a 3rd party app for my optimization. I use a lot of 3rd party apps actually - creature of habit I guess.

It's about time I brought a lot of this stuff up to date!

Thanks for the info.

Thanks IanD for reminding me to do that little task. Smiling It slipped my mind.

I got most of them down in the 30-40 range but some started to loose too much quality below 40. I totally agree on having small image sizes but I think in this case, a little extra weight might be worth a good image impression of the home and beach.

Thanks again,
Sonia

V.6 has it. I use it all the time.

It started with v. 5.5 when they introduced ImageReady. It's actually just a bit of that program pulled into Photoshop. Handy as can be Smiling

I like the right because it is a little different from the norm. But after talking to lots of different kinds of people - I found that the left is better because they 'feel' that it is 'right' and 'normal' to be placed there. So the design may need to change in order to create that balance.
