Resolution of web images.
Hi
I am new to this board and am hoping to learn more about web graphic design. One thing I would like to know is what's the best resolution to make images for the web?

you be the judge, depends upon the quality you would like... you can optimize a jpg for the web, as well as gif can be optimized too... 75 dpi for jpg could work at the most basic need... 300dpi would be max for web but enough for print...

How high you can go on the DPI, depends a lot on format size. Usually I save most of the images I use at 96 DPI, since this is maximum for most monitors. More than that is just a waste of bandwidth to open them, and will slow site loading down.
Actually a high DPI image will look worse on the internet, than one of around 96.

I thought 72 dpi was the web standard? I've never heard of someone using 75 dpi.

There is no web standard, it has to do with monitor specs. 72 used to be the only dot pitch in the industry, but the Hi res monitors go 96 DPI.
I am not sure how they rate the LCD monitors, probably in a comparison they are 96. It really does not matter wheather it is 72 or 75, as long as it is enough.
The accepted DPI for a good print is 300, but I have printed a lot of very good 8 x10's at 200. But for the web 96 would be as much as you want to go, as DPI directly affects file size. And you know the bigger the file the slower it's going to load.
In fact your system will not usually save a jpg, or gif at more than your monitor's DPI. In printing the dpi is controlled by your printer, and can be set higher. But not so just saving one to your hard drive.

Well thanks everyone! I didn't think my question would get such a response. So I gather for most users anything above 75dpi is not going to be noticed because most people dont use HD monitors. I think I will try 96 on some of my more perminant images for the web but for things I change out every week I will use 75 just to keep the loading speeds a little faster. With more and more people getting HD monitors is it worth uping the dpi or do you think I should wait longer until more people get HD.

I never use any progressive coding, of course my main concern is quality not speed.

Thats still quality balanced with speed steve, try it... I used 96dpi before, but then I decided to use internal jpg compression factor and encoding.... its 75 dpi but high-quality...

It would probably give the album program I use indigestion. The less you do to a photo the better it likes it, or leaves it alone? -- which ever comes first?.

Speaking of photos, I am being really slow to get my albums back up. I just can't seem to get in the mood.
But that's not the matter I was going to ask about. I think I am going to leave 50 webs, and I have been looking at two others. AwardSpace, and PhpNet.us, do you know anything about either.????

I guess for a free hosting Id choose awardspace. A friend used that before and he hasnt complained. But I dont think it matters, I always feel queesy with free hosting. I know a cheap hosting with free domain at only about 1USD a month pretty reliable although there uptime is at 95% its still ok for that price. You can opt for a larger offing later.
