You save the simple slices as gif, and the complex slices as jpg...
Slices that contain just text or simple images such as solid colors, illustrations, icons and the like you will save as gifs.
Slices that are complex...that is slices that contain photographs, textures, text on top of photo quality images and the like you save as jpg.
When you go to 'save for web' you can choose each slice to save as whatever extention you need.
Use the slice select tool that is under the hand tool, click on the slice and save it as whatever.
Photos, photo quality, textures and the like can be saved at 50% as jpg with no noticeable loss of quality.
Try to save your gif sections as low as you can...sometimes you need to save at the max 256, and sometimes you can go as low as 8 or 16. Toggle back and forth between the original and optimized tabs to determine what setting is best for gifs.
