Hi, I'm sorry but I'm not realy that familiar with gaming. If you could give us a bit more of a description of what you're going to have on the site it might make it easier for some of us to help you

I don't do games much but most that I have seen have a black background and are 3 column. Why don't you do something different?
have you searched google to see what others are doing?

I agree, try and break the mould of gaming sites. I know most ;gamers' seem to like black screens as that's what they are used to on the actual games, but they don't have to be all quite so dark surely. A console type of look might be good with some interesting colours and neat graphics.

Most gaming sites seem to use a PHP-Nuke type of content management script. That's why they all seem to look alike (3 columns).
Gamers seem to want to spend as little time maintaining their site and more time gaming... go figure

my .02 get out of black like others have said and come up with original copy. most sites i have visited have the same info regurgitated from other game sites. make yours stand out by being unique and offering original content not just copied content.

id agree with what a few of the folks are saying, as I've run gaming and clan sites before. I originally went with the black news site concepts, but it got to generic, one site looked like the next which looked like the next etc etc ad infinitum.
so i decided to stand out from the herd. I did a minimalistic white website, single column with a header navigator. I used small high res graphics, no blurry comic crap, no mega huge graphics, so the images stood out like bugs on the white carpet. it was a very striking site until the clan collapsed in 2000:S.
definately go for the forum, there are some excellent ones out there and gamers love to post.
I'd recommend developing in PHP, mySQL for forums and dynamic info structures. I've found the best forums are for php like http://www.phpbb.com/ which has good support also.
http://phpnuke.org/ is good 2 for content management & gnews.
sheesh and there I am primarily a vbscript aspscript developer recommending php... uncle bill is gonna kill me:D
