Navigation Bar, should I fork out some cash?
Hi again,
Yes, it's me... the one who can't figure out things for himself. Anyway, I've got my new site design up and I'm using freewebs.com to host my site. It's really terrible, but right now I'm really not wanting to fork out a lot of money for FTP and stuff. So I got the site online, but before I proceed in the content I'd like to know something.
My navigation bar has all my links in it, if I want to update the links on the navbar I need to update them on every page, this can reach 30-40 pages in some cases just adding one link to the navigation bar. So, is there anyway of doing this so I only need to update a couple of pages and the rest of the pages follow?
Should I just buy hosting so I can get some FTP privilages?
Thanks,

there are some good cheap hosts around
You can use javascript to house a navigation. downside is it wont work if javascript disabled. Ideally you'd use server side like PHP, ASP but if your host doesn't give you FTP access I doubt they would give you server side usage (which is free *same as ftp* from 99% of hosts these days)
no matter what you did you'd have to edit all your pages to change to it.

Right, so I guess I'll take a wander on down to hosting and see what kinda deals are on offer.
Thanks a lot man,

Yeah, you wouldn't have to pay a lot for hosting at all. I've seen them from a few pounds/month. And a domain would be about 4 or 5 for a year's registration. Sorry, I don't know offhand how to make the pound symbol here.
Your site is looking good! What sorts of characters are those in your sig? They're not coming through for me so I must need a special font.

And aren't the two end characters chinese, not Japenese. I only thought the middle ones in the signature were Japanese.

Heh, thanks guys. A freind of mine gave me this link Clicky Clicky~
It's got FTP \o/ So I'll likely switch there until I buy some more memory for my laptop.
Megan, glad to hear you think the site is looking good. Was actually a good experience, because I want to be a web-designer and this project had restrictions, the forum members wanted it to be pink and if I was to change it, they would desert me. So I guess it was worth it in the long run.
Thanks a lot for the handy tips,
Also, I was sure the writing was all in Japanese, try running it through The Google Ultimate!

... Enormous lovely cat?!
As for your hosting don't forget that you still need to make sure you have access to a server-side scripting language like PHP. It's quite easy to include the contents of one file into another one. In this case you could create a seperate header.php then include_once("header.php");

= / I knew that there would be more shizzle to learn My friend says that he uses Dreamweaver which does all the FTP stuff for him, is this correct or do you think there is still PHP involved?
Thanks for the link, and thanks everyone. You've been a great help~

There is always more "shizzle" to learn. That's what makes the web so fun.
Also, FTP is different PHP. FTP is just a way of transfering files on the internet.

Thanks, my avatar is one of my favourite characters in an anime that I watch. Infact, I'm about to go watch it in a few seconds

Ha Ha, I knew that. One of my favourites too, I can't believe Neji would totally destroy his own sister's insides. I've got up to episode 116 and then it caught up with the manga and it turned into random fillers, might get back to watching Naruto someday. Infact, there is a Naruto section on my website
I think I might make a Sharingan eye as my avatar.
Cheers,

Yes, this is getting a bit off topic but.. those fillers will end in about a months time or so, so it will go back to the main story line.
Anyway... about that navigation bar...

So what actually is your avatar Renegade? I can't discern anything from it at all?!
Ahhh, the nav bar. How're you getting on Shaun? Did you get the PHP working?

Well, I figured that my hosting is a real let down. It doesn't allow PHP, server side scripts or anything of the sort. So I'm going to be gathering some cash and get some hosting with fasthosts.co.uk which give me some FTP accounts. That way I just make a template and when I change something it should change it for the rest of the site no?
Although before I get going with hosting, I want to make sure I know what I'm going to be doing and how I'm going to set up the FTP stuff. I sure hope it isn't too hard and I'll get the PHP stuff sorted out soon.
On another note, I'm waiting to see if I can get into college to do Multimedia Web Development ^__^ I just can't wait to see if they accept me

My avatar is the top right hand side of an anime characters face. The anime is called "Naruto" which is about ninjas and stuff.

Not until someone commented over it that I realized it was an eye, I thought it was a zoomed-out rat or something...
