Is my onclick sound a good idea?
Is my onclick sound a good idea?
Hi I am working on a site that is neither complete nor problem free however I am wondering if fixing a Internet explorer problem with it will be worth it. I have designed into it and onclick sound on all links. My reason for doing this is it has a JavaScript changing slide enabled slideshow. Among the features of the slideshow are a status window which tells you how fast you have the slides set to change. You change the slides changing speed with faster and slower buttons. And there is a five second delay in these actions to accommodate the load time of 56k modem users. Consequently I wished to have greater indication that the buttons had done something that was more than visual so I added a clicking sound on the faster, slower, and on-off buttons. Then for consistency I added it on all links. As of now this feature only works correctly in the Firefox browser and not Internet explorer. Or at least that's how it works on my computer with its operating system and plug-ins. So I wish to know is pursuing an onclick sound that will work correctly in all important browsers a good design decision. My reason for thinking it might not be is the reaction I got when I asked about fixing the JavaScript to make it work on Internet explorer in a JavaScript forum. The reaction I got was you wanna do what, add annoying sounds. I do not think the sound I added is annoying and presently thinks it enhances the site. So if you could please view my site in your Firefox browser and render an opinion I would be most appreciative.
I discovered other problems with the site when I uploaded it the most annoying of which is a jumping back and forth when you use the prev and next buttons instead of the slideshow. This site is not complete so please ignore that fact in its other problems in just render opinions on my clicking sound. This project is intended to be a demonstration site of my web page creation abilities. As of now I am an amateur in which to become a professional. A link directly to a slideshow page is found below.
Eagerly awaiting your feedback

webpages sounds are annoying, especially when not expected.
A lot of people surf the net at work, or with media player going etc, having sounds on a webpage, on every link would be really annoying.
KISS - keep it simple is often the best way to go, less is often more

I'm inclined to agree. You can get away with sounds in a flash driven site if you provide a way to turn them off, but using them with js events i would say is a big no no. They just drive people crazy.

I really don't like any sudden sound on the sites. They make me become mad. Especially it is mistaked when you are very busy. But on entertaiment sites you may place what you want.

I'm one of those boring people who just has sound on mute constantly. The reason, because too many people have sound on their web pages. Normally, when I'm programming, I'll stick some music on (namely, Oasis:))

I have to agree with most of the people here as i think any type of sound in the website will be assumed as noise by the visitor. You can always give an option there where the users can select what they want and that would be all good. No one likes to get distracted by any out of the blues sounds and it is rather irritating sometimes I must say.

I put music on some of my clients' websites at their request, but I also always put an easy-to-find "sound off" button on every page. Regarding the onClick sound, I've done that a couple of times as well... but I lower the sound so that it's barely audible. Lastly, I always ask my clients if they approve of whatever music or sounds have been placed on the site before it goes live. After all, they're paying me and they're the ones I aim to please.
