Logo Help Needed (pronto!)
I have a client who needs a logo done by Wednesday. Nice of him to tell me this last week I'm horrible at logos! Here's what I have so far:

http://www.meganjack.com/itc/samples/logos2.gif
In the first link, he didn't like the ones with the lines across. In the second link, he wanted to try a brigher blue, but as you can see it doesn't work in B/W. He also said something about it looking too sci fi (something about the orange dot being an alien eye ...)
Any help?? He's really stuck on this globe idea so I'm having to work with that.
Some background - ITC stands for International Tobacco Control. They sometimes add "policy evaluation survey" on to that. It's a group of researchers in Canada, Britain, the US, Australia and other countries studying the impact of tobacco control policies (such as labels on cigarette packages). They wanted to stay away from direct tobacco related imagery though. The international aspect is important.

I'd like to help, but I'm not really sure what I can do, or what it is you're actually wanting.
Do you want a critique of the existing work you've done? Or want us to help come up with a different idea? Or both?

Make two versions -- make a b&w version with the brighter blue being a full black?
The i looking like a cigarette is particularly clever. I do like the second link, but not with the radial gradient in that location, something more spherical (up higher on the left and closer to the edge) and less distinct, maybe? It just seems off, probably because of the missing rest of the globe.
The dot in the i and the white space give the appearance of a giant baby (ha!) and of a variant of the yin/yang symbol.
I like it, actually. Also gives the illusion of smoke wafting.

Thanks Suzanne. There's a lot of things I need to refine still... if only I could come up with a base design that the client likes!
Any ideas would be helpful! Differnet ideas, variations on what I've got, anything!

I personally don't like the second page. I like the first page, and I think if you are looking for a color/b&w combo, the third row does it the best

What is the shape of a tobacco leaf? could you use that with the continents on it? are they happy with the thick lettering?

You think the lettering is too thick?
This is so frustrating!!! Now I'm having to reinstall software (again) because Illustrator doesn't want to work properly. Nobody likes anything I've done. This is why I don't like to do a lot of freelance work. It's just not worth the headaches. I also can't get into clipart.com to find some samples of tobacco leaves or more globs.

no no no, *I* don't think the lettering is too thick at all! I like it! I was just trying to figure out what your clients don't like so I could suggest something, do a little brain storming.
I can make you a globe, eh? I think I have the fonts kicking around for the continents, anyway, and I've had to (omg, I can't believe this is true) recreate two globes for logos this month (ha!) alone.
http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&safe=off&q=tobacco+leaf&sa=N&tab=wi tobacco leaves don't appear to be all that distinctive in shape, just in size. The thick veins seem to be a strong identifier, based on the number of images of them, lol...
You can call me if you want, eh? I might be able to help you out.

THe other problem with the globe is that they don't want it to "facing" a certian way. At first they wanted different logos with different continents in front. I talked them out of that.
See, I totally suck at this. 4 hours of work and nothing (okay, so half of that was spent trying to get illustrator to work.) How embarrassing.
Did find a tobacco leaf. Isn't particularly inspiring.
Anythign you could come up with would be nice, as long as it's not too much trouble. He wants something by Wednesday. Here's more of my pathetic efforts:
