A little bit of nav feedback
Hi there guys!
I would be grateful if you could give me some feedback of this nav I have designed. It is my first ever one done in Flash and I know it's VERY big lol!
Many thanks!
I look forward to reading your comments.

It's ok, but why have you done it in flash? Simple rollovers like that could be easily done as javascript rollovers with normal gif files and would solve problems if people don't have flash and seach engines could follow the links.

Hey, not bad for a first.
I am not too crazy about the colors but you get brownie points because it resizes with browser.

I never thought about using Javascript to be honest. Would it be more in terms of file size? This nav is only 4kb...

A lot of it would depend on the size of the graphics and as long as you used a preloading script for the rollovers it shouldn't be too heavy. I would certainly go with rollovers rather than flash.

What about if I added some motion to it instead?

well the filesize would get bigger... and i'd probably get irritated by it. Menu's shouldnt be complicated and flashy, they should be a simple, accessable way to navigate a site. If your doing a menu in flash, your cutting off a chunk of users that don't have the flash plugin, then with sight difficultys using page-reader software won't be able to navigate the site and so on and so forth. Flash is really overkill for a menu.

Looks good to me. If you like it as flash keep it as flash.. I personally think either way will do. Most people seem to have the flash plugin these days or if you wanted to be very user friendly go for the javascript rollovers.

As a swf, you don't have to worry about it's size...that's one cool thing.
I imagine you could do a very similar looking thing using CSS and no images...am I right?

i'd definitely prefer a gif-rollover version, looks ok though.
Also when the nav is embedded into the HTML it won't auto resize.

Yes, TB, you're right. It can also be done in CSS without images, which would make it about the same size or smaller, and totally accessible.

Yes, very simple. It can easily be done using Javascript or CSS
If you want the Javascript code for it, you can find it here

Ah ok...I'll do it in Javascript. It seems like the best option as it would be compatible. Should I save the nav as it is now as a graphic then?
What would I do about the clock in the datewell? Keep it as Flash or find some javascript to do that?

Why do you need a clock? Everyone has one on their pc anyway.
You'll need to save each 'button' as a graphic and also the 'over' state as well so you'll have two sets of buttons for each link.

If I want to know the time I'd look on the bottom right of my screen...It's not something users expect or need from a web site.
Glad to hear you're going to do it using Javascript, it's much more compatible (don't forget your ALT attribute though!)
Also if you have Dreamweaver, ImageReady (comes with Photoshop) or Fireworks the Javascript and HTML can be generated automatically, with good results as well.

I have Fireworks so how could I do it in Fireworks? Should I just have a play around and see what I get?

Suggestion - Lose the clock and use the space to have a bit of descriptive text come up when you mouseOver the nav link. [/suggestion]

Ah ok...good idea. How would I do that? Would that still use javascript and CSS or is that a Flash thing?

Looks good so far... But as others have mentioned, yes I think Javascript is a better solution over flash. Also, I noticed that the links on over, the text changes position by a bit. Some go the left, some go right, and the others don't move...

Just do a search on Google for image swap using JavaScript
