Just not clicking

Does anyone know how many clicks the average user will make to find what they are looking for in a webpage before giving up and moving onto the next site? Also, are there any statistics that anyone is aware of about how long the average visitor will spend on a website trying to find the information that they want?

I have always tried to follow the three clicks "rule" (not realy a rule). This means you should put all your main content witin three clicks of anywhere on your site.

It's hard to quanitify this data. If you want you may want to look at reports of eye patterns on screens done by advanced marketing teams such as marketingsherpa.com. It also probably depends on the site and what the site looks like.

If it looks like a crappy site with spam that may not be on the same topic then they will probably leave quickly, whereas if it is a site that is on topic and looks nice I imagine they would spend a lot more time before moving on.
